Ecological Footprint
April 30, 2003 - 02:46 AM

I know this is a bit late for Earth Day, but there's a great Ecological Footprint calculator online at http://www.myfootprint.org/

You can use it to claculate how your lifestyle impacts the environment.

My total footprint = 15.8 global hectares.

This is NOT GOOD considering that the average ecological footprint in Canada is 8.8 global hectares per person. And that worldwide, there actually only exists 1.8 biologically productive global hectares per person.

My downfalls are huge amounts of air travel and eating meat on a daily basis. Must do something about those two things....

Anyone else care to test out the calculator and share your results????

Not very acurate
April 30, 2003 - 04:38 AM

but cute.
I have not been travelling to any so called "work" for over 2 years now. When i did it was an 18 km. stretch each way. We cannot bycicle in the winter. The public transit did not run so late at night.
As of 2 years ago as well, in my case, i (we) can no longer walk to get my (our) food basics for the family. Forced to drive.
My mind flies to all other parts of the planet all the time yet i cannot include these flights within the questionaire.
I do not drive often or only do so on occasions but letting my oldest son have the car keys at will (all the time) i should feel guilty. Somehow, this also is not included.
My print came out as 5.3 hectares, or 2.9 planets needed.

It is all their fault, the previous generations! They built the subburbs the way they did. So easy to "foot" the blame elsewhere is it not!
If only we could change things!

Malthus Strikes Again?
April 30, 2003 - 04:53 AM

It certainly gives us something to think about. Malthus claimed that food production rose linearly but population rose exponentially, so there would be crisis. He said this before the industrial revolution which allowed for exponential food production. The Club of Rome predicted various shortages that did not come to pass because they made their predictions prior to the internet and the global changes brought about by it.

What the test does show is that we are probably getting close to another big set of changes. At least the new few decades will NOT be boring.

Mine was 4.5, but I guess that is because I don't have a car and I don't have enough money to fly! I did like the site a lot 'cause it makes you realize how much pollution you create and how much you consume. Thanks for the link!

Hey all!!!
My total footprint is 1.7. And all needed is one planet. I' never travel by air. I think that makes my ecological coverage less. I wish all people could live like I do then we will never be bothered with overpopulatio crisis and so forth. Adjust your lifestyles!!!

Well... I managed exactly 8 HECTARES. 8.8 is the Canadian average. I gues that's not bad. It's the air travel that sorta kills me. I walk or take public transportation pretty much everywhere I go so...

People should post their numbers too so we know where their points are coming from..

FOOD 2.2
MOBILITY 0.8
SHELTER 2.5
GOODS/SERVICES 2.5

TOTAL FOOTPRINT 8

FOOD: 1

MOBILITY: 0.2

SHELTER: 0.9

GOODS/SERVICES: 1.8

TOTAL FOOTPRINT: 3.9

Apparently if everyone lived like me we'd need 2 and a half planets!!

CATEGORY GLOBAL HECTARES

FOOD 1.1

MOBILITY 0.6

SHELTER 1

GOODS/SERVICES 1.2

TOTAL FOOTPRINT 3.9

IN COMPARISON, THE AVERAGE ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT IN YOUR COUNTRY IS 8.8 GLOBAL HECTARES PER PERSON.

WORLDWIDE, THERE EXIST 1.8 BIOLOGICALLY PRODUCTIVE GLOBAL HECTARES PER PERSON.

IF EVERYONE LIVED LIKE YOU, WE WOULD NEED 2.2 PLANETS.

Not too much more I can do at this point in time.

Ecological Footprint

My footprint was 16.3. That is unfortunate, but comparitively, I take up less space then most of my fellow Americans; the average is 24. We all need to do something to change this.

Here's my score... I managed a total foot-print of 1.0, which is just 0.2 more than the Indian average.
FOOD 0.3
MOBILITY 0.1
SHELTER 0.4
GOODS/SERVICES 0.2
TOTAL FOOTPRINT 1

And yeah... I am happy to note that if everyone lived like me we would need only ONE PLANET!

An eye-opener really. I got 5.4 global footprint which is substantially more than 1.2 average in the Philippines.

I am sad with this. Got to walk more often.

My stats are:
Category Acres
Food: 2.5
Mobility: 1.7
Shelter: 5.2
Goods/Services: 4.4
For a grand total of: 14.2 acres, which is significantly below the US's average of 24 acres/person, but hardly anything to be proud of because we would need 3.2 planets to support a world of mes. As you can see, shelter was my biggest misuse of the earth's resources.

greyarmidillo, nice footprint. I didn't even think that was possible. If only we could all somehow be as environmentally frugal as you.

Greyarmadillo, congratulations. How do you manage to take up 1/15 of the space I do? I suppose it helps that food is much more easily locally grown in India; in my state in the northern US, we produce a lot of dairy products but not much else. I'm a strict vegetarian, but apparently that didn't help me too much. Shelter also hurt; my house is about average sized for my community. It really makes you wonder about people who own several residences. It seems like there's never any way to justify it.
