The "New Seven Wonders" controversy
July 8, 2007 - 03:42 AM
|
|
A Swiss corporation called New Open World Corporation (NOWC) recently announced the winners of the "New Seven Wonders". But UNESCO commented that the results reflected "only the opinions of those with access to the internet". Controversy arose as experts suggested this campaign was strongly influenced by patriotism and some countries such as Egypt were disaproval of the results.
So is this compaign a meaningful event? What is the most pragmatic method to raise the public awareness of protecting cultrul heritages?

the question is not easy..
According to me, the all world shoud have the right to vote for the 7 wonders.
But many cant vote cos they dont have internet or phone is expensive, or they cant read, etc..
Then who can the wonders be selected? As you said maybe some will vote for a wonder cos it s in their country or cos they visited it.
NO VOTE CAN BE 100% FAIR OR EQUITABLE
then how can we come closer to it? maybe by selecting the numbers of electors per country so that even developing countries can vote. But then to get to the poor population, to get a fair percentage of poor, rich, literate, young, old, they questionnary must be seriously checked and will be very exepensive.. and well i ll say maybe they are better ways to spend money than to know which are the 7 wonders on earth, maybe like eradicating the 7 sickness and matters on earth
;-)

It is just a commercial contest, and i think it is agreat idea to make a propaganda and income to the hoster country.
Egypt refused that the great pyramids be in just like commercial contest cause their is no suspicion that the pyramids is the frist of wonders since 7000 years ago.

Although it did attract the public to pay a attention to cultrural heritages, such a contest seemed to be another "multimedia commercial" made by clever businessmen.
The organizers' intention towards educating the public or maybe helping people appreciate all various cultures is questionable.
I found it inmature to be over-patriotic, Human heritages such as the Great Wall or the pyramids need no judgement. Standing there is their own way to prove their value.

I know that is good for people to know about the culture, but the vote is not a wise way for choosing the world wonders, cause the people did not know the miracle in this things, they just have seen a beautiful view.
Finally, my best regards for the great wall in china

New list of Seven Wonders of the World features Taj Mahal (India), Great Wall of China (China), Petra (Jordan), Christ the Redeemer (Brazil), Chichen Itza Pyramid (Mexico) and Colosseum (Italy) and Machu Picchu (Peru). However, the Great Pyramid of Egypt was an honorary candidate and not featured in the voting list.
History of seven wonders dates back to ancient period when the historian Herodotus (484 BC – 425 BC) and the noted scholar Callimachus (305 BC – 240 BC), made lists of Seven Wonders of the World. Their list included the Great Pyramid of Giza, Hanging Gardens of Babylon, Statue of Zeus at Olympia, Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, Mausoleum of Masussollos at Halicarnassus, Colossus of Rhodes and Lighthouse of Alexandra. Amongst these wonders only Great Pyramid of Giza is standing even today, while other six were destructed by earthquake, fire or other reasons.
Further in the middle age a number of lists for ‘Seven Wonders of the World’ had been created, but those lists were not created by modern-medieval historians, so they are not authentic. In the modern age wonders of the world had been grouped into various categories namely Modern Wonders, Natural Wonders, Underwater Wonders and Tourist Travel Wonders which were sub-divided into man-made travel wonders and natural travel-wonders. Then, the Wonders of the World were designated according to the research and suggestions of scholars and historians. For New Seven Wonders of the World, first time the online voting and SMS system were used and around 10 crore people around the world exercised their vote.
