you dont tease them, i mean its serious and its not funny, when u think someone has sars u tell em so stay away from u and that u should tell other people, so u dont affect other people

I think it would be stupid to say that its funny that someone has SARS because whats funny about a disease that is killing poeple around the world and has no cure?

People shouldn't be saying that when it's not true. I mean other people may belive that and actually run away from that person. Sars is something that is very serious and shouldn't be joked about. I don't find that funny. People shouldn't tease someone else for having Sars when they don't.

That is dumb to tease someone when they don't have SARS, but it does happen in schools. But I don't think that they are saying it anymore because there hasn't been much news about SARS right now.

As with all teasing, I think that SARS-related teasing can be overdone. On the otherhand, it is a not unreasonable coping mechanism- in the face of a disease that people do not understand and are fairly powerless again, humor is one of the only means of defense. Context is important as well. For example, I live in a state in the US that has been almost completely unaffected by SARS. Thus, in my view, teasing is more appropriate here than in a place like Hong Kong that has been ravanged by the disease and where people living in fear will not take any mention of the disease kindly.

It is not right to joke about SARS because it is a serious disease and many people have either died or are in fatal condition because of it. It is important to understand how deadly and critical SARS really is.

I guess in my opinion it's just a matter of where and when. It's not like I'd walk up to a random guy on the street and start saying that they had SARS. But my friends and I will do it if someone has a bad cold; it's too far removed from our reality for anyone to perceive it as a real threat and it is often one of the few ways of connecting with the panic going on in the rest of the world, if that makes any sense. It makes people realize what it must be like to live somewhere where the tiniest sneeze can mean a life-threatening disease.
Also, it's in my nature to question hysteria. SARS, serious as it was, was somewhat overblown. Compared to the many diseases humans have endured over the ages, it's affect was merely monetary and psychological, rather than physical. Consider the bubonic plague, which took out a quarter of some European contries. SARS was just a drop in the bucket by comparison. I joked about anthrax last fall, so I'm not targeting any one region of the world. But I think humor is sometimes the only cure in face of fear.
