E Learning
June 24, 2007 - 03:03 AM

We had a presentation in our college about e learning.... the concept is slowly being introduced in India.

Are you familiar with the concept of e learning?

Does your school use this concept?

Do you find it more interesting than the traditional methods of education in schools?

What the things you like about it ?

Are there any aspects where you find traditional methods better?

I am familiar with e learning, as a matter of fact I am taking it next year, one course that is. For some reason our school does not publisize this at all, I do not understand why. E learning is very flexible. In some of schools, it says that you have to have a full course load which I don't think is necessary, this way, if its not then more people can finish their school while working, and most importantly its flexible!

Thank you for your response .

I am of the opinion that it should not completely replace the traditional methods of teaching where there is more scope for a personal interaction and a better teacher-student relationship.

I think it should only be used as a tool for effective documentation and as an information database for students along with the traditional way of schooling.

It can also be used for distance learning especially in remote places where infrastructure doesnt support a full fledged school/university system.

e-learning can also raise the level of education and economic development in such places by making education cheaper and accessible especially technical education.

I agree that the best characteristic of e-learning is its flexibility. This is extremely important for working students, parents, etc. My college roommate's sister was recently diagnosed with leukemia, and she was going to have to take the semester off from school to be with her in another state. However, she's worked it out so that she's still taking a full course load online. E-learning is great from eliminating geographic boundaries.

Is it better than a traditional learning environment? No, but it is certainly a good alternative option to have for certain circumstances. We can't forget the value of human interaction, even if simply just for the social skills it helps individuals to develop.

I agree with everything that has been said.

eLearning utilizes technology to make training more accessible to learners despite location, special needs and learning styles.

When people think of eLearning, they usually think of formal training like courses, which can be stand alone or blended with instructor led training.

Another important dimension of eLearning is informal learning, which the web has been fostering for years. If you need a piece of information right now...you launch a browser and find it 5 seconds. Tools such as blogs, wikis, podcasts and social networks have enhanced the ease of finding and sharing information with our peers.

What I am excited about is how we can use these new web tools to blend into the class room.
