The ice age scare of the '70s was mostly a media creation. Scientists have been studying greenhouse gases and their climatic impact since the early 1900s. The majority of the scientists in the '70s (e.g., Roger Revelle founder of UCSD and Scripps Institute) were more worried about global warming.
Except for some of the environmental movement, most of the scientists talking about climate change are not talking about ending capitalism. In fact, history shows that markets have survived several energy transitions (e.g., coal, oil, electricity, etc). Phasing out carbon is no more anti-capitalist than phasing out lead and mercury.

What will happen if global warning actually does take over the world if it exists? Will humans develope gills during evolution?

I dont have any problems with new fuel sources. In fact ive been a strong supporter of nuclear energy for a long time now.
please suffer me an example though. Lets say a ready fuel is presented for public use. lets call it "green juice" how do you envision the transition and the switch from gasoline to green juice?
In this senario will the combustion engine work with green juice. If not, then how to low income families afford to buy a new car to keep up with the environmental movement.
I know in my neck of the woods there are gas stations on every corner. I cant even imagine the cost of re-outfitting these privately owned businesses to embrace the fuel change to green juice. Who pays for that. Also, with everyone needing to switch over quickly due to what I would imagine being a government mandated change...there is going to be a lot of on going construction that I imagine will disrupt businesses that have nothing to will fuel industries. How is that addressed?
Aside from cars, how about tractors, or any agricultural vehicle? How about my lawn mower or weed eater? To me it sound like a lot of new goods will have to be bought, and then the disposal of all the old goods could create another enviromental paradox. How would this be addresses?
Understand, I am not trying to trap or make fun here. I am very sarcastic at times but that who I am...I do think alot about what re-outfitting our planet will entail to meet with subjective standards of the enviromentalist movement. Im curious to your thoughts

You have just voiced why there is such controversy over the carbon issue. Historically, energy technology conversions occurred over a 30 yr period. Gasolene has held on so long because it contains enormous energy per unit volume. Batteries, hydrogen, methanol, etc are at least 50% less energy per unit volume as gasolene.
Still, we need to convert to lower carbon fuels. While I cannot claim to have all the answers, I do acknowledge it will NOT be the cakewalk the some environmentalists claim. Energy transitions are never easy.

Well, first I try to make a distinction between "bona fida" skeptics and liers.
Bona fida global warming skeptics really believe that.... eh, the world has always been hot and there are not final proofs about the cause for warming.
These are the people with whom we can speak with open heart. Show them the flooding in England and drieness in Souther Europe, strong hurricanes and tornados, etc. Tell them that
1) there are scientific proofs about global warming
2) even if there were none, still: do they think all the pollution dumped in the environment is really harmless? Come on!
About liers... Well, they deny global warming for personal interest. In this case, it is pointless to discuss with them. But, if there are witnesses, I suggest to have a polite debate. The liers will not admit you tell the true, but at least you can win support from listeners.

I'm a friend of an American family in the south. Reccently I wa surprised to find that they remained sceptical on the global warming issue.
They seemed to have enough proof to question the science I learnt towards global warming and the conversation got "complacted" when it came down on politics. I don't think Al Gore's documentary is gonna help 'cause they were so "republicant".
I was wondering whether you guys have run into some more "stubborn" sceptics.*
How are we supposed to debate and convince them, the most importantly, get them into our environmental process?

Unfortunately, you can't debate global warming with skeptics because they have facts and logic on their side. One day, everyone will all be slapped in the face with the brutal reality that global warming as caused by humans is mostly a scam. Until then, keep dreaming.

You all must be clearly out of your minds.
When people ask me whether or not i believe global warming exists and whether or not the temperature of the earth is increasing, can you guess my answer?...
"You're absolutely right", in fact the world's been warming ever since the ice age!
But is this a problem? OF COURSE NOT!.
So what happens when the earth gets too hot? An ice age occurs, but fortunately it is nothing to worry about, because the earth has experienced them several times. Global warming is inevitable regardless of what Al Gore tells the public. In fact, not only is it inevitable, but it is 100 percent natural and is only a small part of the earth's continuing cycle.
So keep driving your vegetable juice powered cars and frowning upon the "filthy" cigarette smoking, Hummer driving, right wing nuts who pollute your beautiful earth. Look how quickly they are destroying the ozone with their carbon dioxide emissions. Its a shame it is not yet possible to cap all those darn volcanoes which release between 185 million to 255 million tons of carbon dioxide each year!!!!!!!
People get a grip. If you are so worried about the earth, do something productive. Recycle, participate in beach cleanups, or volunteer to clean up at local parks. Don't sit back and find someone to blame for the earth's natural cycles. There is no reason to get upset or worried about it, and regardless of what you think, there is no stopping it.

What you said concerning the earth is true.
Many ice ages happened and the earth has warmed even more than what we have now.
there is however a small difference. it is us, humans. The hustle around global warming is not to protect the earth as such, it would be erroneous and impossible, but to protect humans. humans will be eradicated just like dinosaurs who survived nearly 300 million years to be eradicated after climatic changes.
Humans care of their survivial and in order to elevate the message and to mobilize the whoe humanity by appealing to a common danger they evoke by a hyperbole the Earth, claiming it is the Earth that is in danger and leaving the taciturn implication of our own danger below.

How can anyone deny that we are destroying our planet? Everyone...And I mean Every person on this planet need to realize that every activity that involves burning or any form of oxidation for energy use is the wrong way to live. The planet can take care of it's self, we are nothing but a blip in the earth's geological time, but for the time we are here, we need to start learning how to sustain every aspect of energy consumption with "radical approaches", such as using sustainable energy sources such as solar, wind, geothermal, and nuclear...and i call these radical approaches because i honestly don't really see any wide scale change in human behavior regarding energy consumption...just stop burning coal and oil, the buying and selling of these resources are causing great economic disparities between the oil rich and the consumer.
The world's demand of fossil fuel is like having a drug addiction, when we go to the fuel pump to fill our vehicles, its a dependency...something we need to stop right now. There will be grave consequences but it is a price that we need to pay. Stop filling the oil companies pockets with your hard earned money, be creative in the ways you choose to transport yourselves, be imaginative, think of what our children will think of us, don't only think of ourselves because we aren't here long enough to judge the conclusions of the goals we set forth during our lifetimes to make the future a better place...its on everyone one of us to make change. its the individual that holds the power, don't listen to media or government, listen to yourself...

Many people have their own reasons to be skeptical about climate change.
Some have not had access to education – from the statistics on this site, this is still a substantial concern, but one that is slowly being addressed.
Some people recognize that there is problem, but don’t want to think about it. They don’t want to grasp how big or difficult it is and, individually, don’t believe they can do anything about it, and so they deny that it exists.
Then there are some who recognize there is a problem, and they have a reference frame for solving problems, and they are applying that reference frame, and it isn’t working, but they don’t have any alternative so they either deny that the problem exists, or claim that it cannot be solved.
We need to remember that climate change skeptics are people – we all have hopes and fears – some fears we can deal with, and others we don’t want to think about.
The way I see it, we have to work hardest with people who recognize the problem but aren’t doing anything about it– they are apathetic - they procrastinate, they know they can do something but need someone else to lead.
Climate change is real – we have to live and communicate in the world where climate change is real. There are many solutions to it – some we have – others we can find. We need to live in the moment and we need to act now. Who’s with me?
