Emails in our life
June 18, 2007 - 07:02 AM

A resarch showed that half of Brits cannot "live" without email.

Half of Britons could not exist without e-mail - with 30 or 40-somethings more addicted than teens, a survey finds.
Fifty per cent of 25 to 34-year-olds told ICM researchers they would not be able to carry on without e-mail.

Forty one per cent of teenagers said they relied on e-mail, while 44% of 35 to 44-year-olds said email was vital.

The South East was the most e-mail-reliant region, with 43% of people telling the poll for software firm Nasstar they relied on it.

Wales was the lowest, with only 34% saying e-mail was vital to them.

What is the usage you give to emails, and what is the importance of a daily, weekly or monthly emailing for you?

The allure of email, in my opinion, is that it satisfies our urge for instant gratification. Within seconds (if you type fast wink ) you can relay a message to family or friends and a few seconds later, have a response. It is also efficient and generally cost-effective. Well, at least for me, its much easier to send email to my family, spread throughout the US, than it is to call.

Still, call me "old fashioned" but I LOVE to get real mail in my mail box more than getting email in my inbox. There is just something much more tangible and personal in holding a letter in one's hand, seeing the writer's personality come through in the script, choice of colors, paper, etc. I would hate to lose either email or "snail mail." They both have their purposes.

E-mail appeared in order to make our lives much more efficient and increase our quality of life as a whole. Instant communication is already a part of almost every person's life. I think the only time when people will stop saying that e-mail is vital to them is when something better shows up.

I doubt anybody is seriously 'Dependant' upon e-mails.

I do not think that you can literally be addicted to e-mail communication.

However I do stop to realize that e-mail makes so much of life easier. It provides a method of communication that speeds up every process and interaction.

Personally I never use e-mail unless I have to. They are inefficient in my opinion.

I disagree I think e-mails are a vital part of modern society. I work for a company that relies on e-mail and I find them quintessential in my life

I cannot think of being without e-mail. They're pretty much a necessity.
Although, you can ofcourse live without them, but once you get in the habit of it, then it's probably tough to stay without them
Personally, I just have to check my e-mail daily.

I use email every day as a way of communicating with my friends who are far away.
But I'm not dependent on email.

Ok, so I think that was more of a figure of speech than anything really, but that just makes me wonder.... is it really a part of that many people's life? We rarely think that it would even be possible but... outside our immediate community, there are SO many people who do not have access to computers, to the internet, to an e-mail account. *Too* many people aren't even literate enough for that. Maybe not in some countries, but in some others, that is certainly the case. What do they do?

Try. What would happen? Phones? More 'snail mail'? Would it really be all that awful? Sure, it would be different, and a bit slower and maybe a bit more... stressful, in the respect that sometimes, more personal communications are. At least I know that given the choice of phone v. e-mail, I pick e-mail, because I don't have to talk to someone immediately, I don't get all flustered, I get to review my texts, I get to draft, etc. It is just such less pressure.

That is very very true. While they both have their merits and their downfalls, I don't think that either one should be eliminated or anything like that. Clearly, it is not like e-mail will one day just *poof* disappear off the face of the earth, because that is not just the way that happens, but I do think it would be much nicer if people took a bit less time e-mailing and a bit more on picking out stationery, and pen, and words so that they don't scribble... The fact that snail mail takes more trouble and more time is exactly what makes it so much more special, I think!

Well, you do know that there are people out there that do think that not e-mail alone is a cause of addiction, but that the internet as whole is. There are treatment places and support groups and "internet anonymous" flyers being handed out. It is quite an interesting phenomenon when you stop to think about people's dependence not only on technology but also on the internet.

Email is vital to me. I’m getting my degree via distance education. So any communication with my teachers is usually via email. However, even if I wasn’t using distance education I would still rely heavily on email. I live in Germany, and my best friend lives in another city in Germany. We talk on the phone, but late at night when I need to tell her something it’s done via email. I think if it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t use my email. I’m the kind of person that I’m very selective about who I talk to. Only people I trust get my attention, sounds standoffish but it’s a defense mechanism.

Sometimes email can be deceiving though. You can’t see the other persons face, you can’t read their body language. It’s not always the ideal way to talk. Either way email is important but I think it depends on the person.

We can live without emails.Email is another form of communication at the moment, very fast
Government and other spy agencies are reading or tapping your emails on a daily basis.
Email will never create a sense of happiness. Most of them are asource of agony, suffering, frustration.
We have a disease called Email addiction disorder

I'm not addicted to email. I've lived for months without the internet, and not missed a thing. I think people just get too obligated to reply to emails, to check emails if they get them, to forward messages thinking someone might miss out on the 'good stuff', etc. Life without email ? All I can say is, without emails, people will learn the value of time and patience.
