I'm a student of communication studies at University of Indonesia. I 'm working on a research related to the change of youth behavior in using new media/internet in various countries. I actually need a help from anyone who join this forum to share their information/the fact about this issue to have a stronger predictions about what will happen between youth and new media in next few years in each country and in global youth community.

The media has an enormous impact on today's youth. Most of the learning today depends highly on visual communication and the TV, for one, generates a lot of information which the youth instantly absorb.
One of the problems that I see here is the media's capacity to manipulate information and send their distorted messages to the public as facts. The lack of multi-sided information today or the dominance of some sources has lead the youth to become less critical of what they see and hear.

This is my favourite topic and so much can be said about it. You see even before the advent of the internet, the electronic media left its mark on the youth that were then probably children. Its importance cannot be denied. Now we need to look at 2 aspects:
1. Access to information
2. Platform to have their say
In my country, during the last two years, there has been a lot of development regards this. Before there were TV channels for youth and were confined to video and song requests. Now full fledged youth channels are working that focus on the needs, opinions and representation of the youth. This has boosted the confidence of the youth a lot. If someone has anything to say that is for the betterment of everyone, they might have a chance to do that on TV!

The new media (internet and co) will strongly take on a lot of issues that the old media (Television and co) failed to address.
We are going to witness a situation where a young person goes to the internet with the soul aim of getting fun but will end up doing some work.
We will also witness a situation where the direction of flow of content will be reversed. Majority of the content will come from the audience while the while the media will now serve as the umpire. This is going to give the youths the opportunity of deciding what they see and hear on air.
The bottom line is that the new media is the media for the free mind, hence we are going have a youth that is more aware.

Hi Arief,
I believe with the emrge of new technologies, more access to information has been provided, so that youth are more aware of what happenes around them in the world.

I beleive that young people ICT has very much changed the way they view and interact wtih the world around them. It has opened up a wealth of information that is available at the fingertips of those fortunate enough to have access to ICT and it also gives those young people a chance to contribute to change in partnership with people around the world.
On the other hand, I also believe that these technologies also have their downside. I agree with a previous post that information is easily manipulated and that this wrong or biased information can be detrimental to those reading it. Also, I worry that while it is a great communication tool that it is also adding to our generations strong apathetic nature. As American talk show host Steven Colberts sad & accurate summation of our generation stated, "rather than amassing people to stage a march on Washington, we now amass hits on a website calling for a march on washington"- rather than really connecting we are simply making a bit of passive noise "from the polite distance of our home computers" and I wonder if we'll be able to shake that off.

Its very Difficult to say that youths can grow with new media and digital world especially the disadvantaged African youth.
Unless these facilities are readily made available to them.
