Molesting the Mountains of Negros

10 years ago the mountains of Negros Occident is still considered a virgin to tourist. Local people greet visitors who came to their villages to view panoramic views of the mountains. One can relax at nipa houses and makeshift shanties and experience the lives of the locals the natural way. Last week as I came back to one of these villages, I noticed a destructive change. The villages are surrounded by fences and barbed wires, the once peaceful villages is transformed into breeding farm of fighting cocks. Lands were bought from them and converted into resorts and vacation houses of the rich and feeling rich (here in Negros they thrive) the ecosystem is sacrifice for luxury and for money.

What is happening there is so sad. I wish to be of help to you. Grabe guid ang natabo!
Also, this may be jumping the gun, so to speak, but I think you should get in touch with the media. As we have seen with other cases, the local officials immediately act upon media pressure.Similarly, it would also generate attention to your projects, which could provide you with much-needed help (financial and otherwise).
Bantay-Kalikasan of ABS-CBN Foundation (http://www.abs-cbnfoundation.com/kalikasan/index.asp) and Kabang Kalikasan ng Pilipinas (World Wildlife Fund-Philippines)- http://www.wwf-phil.com.ph/ could be of help.
Good luck!

Drop me a note on my TIG Messenger and I can update you on everything friends and I worked on around Silay City in 1994-95. I did my forestry thesis there and was involved in debates with the government at the time regarding the future of ecotourism in the region. My friend Rusty Binas (from Bacolod) from IIRR -- who moved to Quito recently -- knows the local environment and development communities quite well. I don't have their contacts with me here at work, but I can send them to you by TIG messenger over the weekend.
Keep up the great work!
