A female Speaker

History has just been made today in Nigeria,
as the first female speaker of the congress of the largest black democracy in the world emerges at the inauguration.
Mrs Patricia Etteh of Osun State.
it took Nigeria just 47 years to get there.
i am proud to be a Nigerian, the future is getting brighter for women for African women.

I am not one of those gender sensitive writers but I am one of those advocating for a change in the way people do business here (government work or private sector). I believe in today's Nigeria, women who have had an opportunity to serve in sensitive Government positions have more than proved to their male counterparts that they mean business, as far as being productive, sincere and reducing corruption and corrupt practices are concerned. I am of the opinion that their performance in the very little space of time has more than justified why others would want them to be given higher responsibilities. If you are saying that a woman is making history today from that angle, you have my full support.
Needless to say, the search for messiahs to deliver us to the promised land should not be restricted to political affiliations, academic backgrounds, relation, business colleagus and what have you. We should expand our search to all nooks and cranies of the country, ignoring religion, forgetting tribal affiliations, overcoming sentiments and bias. All these of course must be applicable to men and women folk alike! Afterall, in the 2006 census figure that we so much celebrate today, the difference in population between males and females was not significant, or was it? We wouldnt want to restrict our search to only about 50% of the country, or would we?
For all I care, there should be about 18.5 female speakers in Nigeria. Oooooooops?(Abuja has no state house of assembly), so 18 should do, ok?

Thanks for your response, I think we need more woman.
Women are really performing wonders in Nigeria.
See Okonjo Iweala, Dora Akinyulil, Joy Emordi etc.
Anyway, thank God things are getting better for the women.

This goes a long way to show that all hope is not lost. We are getting there as a nation.

Hallo,
This is for sure good news but I would'nt refer to it as history! I would describe this as an act of a people who now believe in women' potential minus affirmative actions and also women who now believe in there own potentials!
Congratulations Mrs Patricia and Nigeria in general!

Oh! you guys are really missing the point. The problem with this country is that we are ready to celebrate mediocrity as long as it is able to caress our sentiments. Points to ponder:
1, is this woman the best person for the job?
2, does she have a track record?
3,what sacrifices has she made for our dearly beloveth country?
4,who and who were instrumental to her being made the speaker?
I am not trying to be pessimistic here but trust me when I say that, "it is too early to call for a celebration".

Aikyg,
Good one there.
Don't forget, when Dora Akinyuli came on board little was known about her, Okonjo Iweala, was actually made cos of her fat CV and the World Bank connections, Etteh was a former Deputy Speaker at the House of Assembly in her State.
Forget how she came, if she were to be a man, the position would have been gotten same way.
The most important thing is that the females are getting there.
First of its kind in the hstory of Africa.
Do you know it took America 220 years to achieve that.
