what sars has done for the asians

Most of you know about the SARS outbreak, but i feel really bad for the asians. the asians in our community have faced a lot of humiliation with people not going near them because of fear of catching the virus. Or for kids our age not being someones friend because they are from asia. An Asian person did bring this virus into Toronto but still there is no excuse for acting that way around them. We still have to live our daily lives but we just have to be careful of how we live it.

Seleila: i was on the elevator w/ jess
Seleila: and then
Seleila: this girl by the buttons covers her mouth and nose
Seleila: and i was looking at her thinking "O_o... what the mother..."
Seleila: and then we were getting off the elevator
Seleila: and she removes her hand
Seleila: and was saying to her friends and like snickering saying "i didn't want to get sick"
Seleila: i almost wish i had sars and got better, but infected her

who really cares if they think all of us asians have sars, if they wanna be idiots and stick their arm up to their mouths, you should COUGH, COUGH COUGH
my mom, i think most of you heard my brother's school has been affected with sars (Albert Campbelle), all my moms co-workers stepped away from her, my mom started coughing and she FINALLY got some peace for a while, till the school opened, so if you hate people around you and they wanna be idiots, all you gotta do is cough

Sars

First of all,
I just want to say that Sars is an unexplainable illness. It is a virus, related to a strand of the Corona virus. Researchers are currently testing 30 different types of vaccines in the U.S. to innoculate, prevent, as well as eliminate the sickness. No one has found a cure...and the death rate from Sars is startling. It is no wonder that people are feeling scared and are nervous. The illness did origionate in China, however it was NOT perpetuated by the PEOPLE persae, yet by the government who spent more money on manufacturing and other related industries(globalizing) then on Public Health Care, and their own people. For those reasons China was unprepared for such an epidemic... and sadly it has killed already hundreds of people, and infected thousands of others.
Although it seems like other kids may be discriminating, perhaps they are just afraid that they will get the virus...Dealing with sickness is a hard thing, and no one wants to get infected or die unwillingly. Its serious. That being said, it still is unfair, and wrong to wish harmful things on people, especially considering the fragility of the topic, and the harshness of the illness.
Specifically to Jason, your words in themselves are racially loaded, and seem to be a result of discrimination placed against you, your friends, or maybe even your mother. Given it is scary that your school is infected, to wish Sars on someone else is wrong, period. You can't fix the problem by continuing the ignorance. If you are upset about the way that peers or the media are portraying your people, or culture regardless of the context then SPEAK UP... Change can only happen if you will it, and if you have the stregth to initiate it.
Coughing up ignorance will only spread it at an ever faster rate...
Peace

I know like people like automaticlly think if a disease spread to an area its infected and there's nothing u can do about it. And say if a chinease person originally caused itn auto matically there race is infected and you have to sheild ur self from everyone .

Shanay great discussion you posted...I have been wondering what effect the SARS has had in the Asian community. Myself coming from a black african background who happens to be young and male, have and experience all sorts of uncomfortable and at times unjust situations. quick example if you work in to a convinent store...automatically you have come to steal??? So when I say I can imagine what you go through when you automatically work in and everyone says you have SARS!
How should we speak out to all this... are people justified to feel the way the feel. Am I being inconsiderate when i think that people should not be afraid, when an Asian coughs or when a young black male gets into that store?
How has the asian community been cooping with all this... and finally how has the Asian community been treating each other. Are they supporting each other or are they holding there noses each time someone else coughs?

I think that this is a good topic, timely too. I'm an Asian and intially, there were Asians who don't trust each other and move away when someone coughs or sneezes. But as time passed, the citizens in my country realised that the government were taking precautions and taking control of the situation. With the government coming up with the taking of temperatures daily and quick action in tracing those who have had contact with SARS patients, the citizens had nothing to fear. Even now, life is back to normal and has not changed much.
However, my father works overseas and when he returned to where he worked, his collegues were sort of frightened and stayed away from him.So i guess that there is ultimately a slight discrimination, especially with the SARS virus being spread on by an Asian first.

SARS

i noe how asian ppl feel cuz i am one. am a chiness girl living in toronto. once i was walking down the street and i had something to cough about (juss to clear my throat like any normal perosn would do) and a gentleman was walking beside me moved away from me instantly. if i wasn't asian then he probably wouldn't have done that.
Sure, SARS started in China but it started with 1 person and it was his/her fault and the whole nation gets blamed and all its people get harrassed?
