YOUTH PARLIAMENT
May 24, 2007 - 09:23 PM

So this year, our youth parliamentarians, after our sitting, asked the government to consider making Youth Parliament permanent. What say you guys? Do you believe that a permanent youth parliament is a good idea?

Only if there are democratic and open elections. In that case the members are really representatives of the youth and not a group of elite young people pretending to represent young people.

what if the members were chosen by their youth and sports councils because of their community service? And the members were only given two terms in office?

I believe a Permanent Youth parliament is a good idea in that it helps to give youths a voice. Just be open to critism and have a goal and long term plan that keeps the focus on youths and the issues they face.

Keep in mind, "Our youths today are the leaders of tomorrow" - That could be a nice slogan to garner support.

I really support the idea of a permanent youth parliament.
Why not have an island wide election campaign comparable with the official campaigns.
In this way the elections are open for all the local youth and not only those that participate in one or more organization.

Like here on Bonaire, not even 15% of the youth are involved in youth organizations (not including sport organizations). In my opinion youth are not trained to think and express their opinion in a sports organization.
So I'm pro island wide elections. In this way the younger youth that does not have the voting right yet could get acquainted with the democratic process.

It's actually wonderful coz youths do think about about the future i.e what it holds for them and the coming generations.Lets say we are creative, innovative and active and with these we can handle anything.

i think a permanent youth parliament is defiantly a good idea -I've been involved in the australian program twice now and it's an amazing experience especially knowing that what we have said is actually passed onto the relevant ministers for consideration and bills that have been passed have even been made into law- taking this a step further and giving youth our own permanent parliament i think is needed there are very few parliamentarians in australia under 30 meaning there is a large percentage of the country who's voices aren't being heard and until we give youths seats in actual parliament then this idea is defiantly a worthy substitute
