Double Standard

Why does the US condemn certain countries for having weapons of mass destruction, when, in our posession, we have chemical and nuclear weapons of power, and so do many of our allies? If we are going to go around and attack every country on the basis of the fact that they have weapons, using OUR weapons, and then accept our allies' weapons... who's going to trust the US now??

See, it's not the mere fact of having those weapons, it's what the countries might do with them. The US is understandably worried about nuclear, chemical and biological weapons - less that a state will use them, but more that a terrorist group will obtain these weapons and use them against the US somehow.
It doesn't bother them that, say, the UK has nukes because the US knows the UK wouldn't just randomly nuke them.

Isn't it possible that a terrorist group could get its weapons from somewhere other than Middle-Eastern countries? I'm sure that there are terrorist groups all over the world, not only in the countries surrounding Iraq. It makes no sense to condemn only certain countries, while we allow others to keep their weapons, because these risks pertain to all countries.

ok, while this does make sense, this is the part where racial profiling comes into play.
From past experiences, The biggest baddest terrorists are of an islamic background. And before people jump down my throat I'm not racist, thats just how it is, and i don't beleive all islamic people are terrorists, nor do I run around wondering if that woman in traditional dress is a suicide bomber hiding something underneath.
But the fact is, given the background of these terrorists is overwhelmingly weighted toward islam, it makes sense to play on this "double standard".
Racial Profiling is not the be all end all, but as long as it doesn't intefere with the daily life of people and is not intrusive, then it certainly has it's place.

yeah - that is wrong, BUT i think it can be done without being as intrusive as this.
The line between where it is acceptable and not is very fine, but basically the profiling must NOT GENERALISE A RACE as a whole, but identify that certain people of that race are more prone to whatever (in this case to commit acts of terrorism).
People must identify people whom they suspect, but it must go deeper than racial grounds, although statistically, this is a good population in which to start, narrowing the field significantly, and allowing quicker investigation as a result.
The investigation must be carried out as unintrusively as possible! If possible, the people wouldnt even know about it, But if they had to, a way must be devised such that it will NOT effect the persons day to day life

Racial profiling is very touchy though.... like all generalizations, how can you cast greater suspicion on someone just because they're of the same religion as a terrorist? Racial profiling's lead to friends of mine being detained and thoroughly searched at airports because they're from the Middle East, while I (being male and white) get by scot-free with just a photocopied passport and a medicare card. Go figure.

Once you start making it ok to detain people just because of their skin colour, you're opening a whole new can of worms. Civil liberties can't just go out the window... there needs to be some addressing of root causes behind terrorism, and not just trying to board up the windows and doors to try to prevent them from getting in!

Actually I got into the US with just a photocopied birth certificate, not even a passport.
It's kind of hypocritical, because why is it less probable that I'll be a terrorist just because I'm not a Muslim?
