Another good idea about blogs is a forum such as this very one we are all on. Letting students talk together is a good idea. My teachers used to put questions on the books we were reading at the time and we would answer, then if we disagreed with anyone, we would get into long discussions about it online. Try making this blog/forum a grade, such as for every 2 posts you get your full partisipation grade.
As to carry it out, make one, use the puzzles and crossword puzzles (there are websites that you enter the words into and it makes it for you) and make it fun! Let them create accounts and for every 3 they complete they get an answer on their next text (or 5 points).
You could also use cool designs for your blog and cool quotes to encourage students to look around it.

In my opinion, websites or even blogs can prove to be useful and enjoyable in the classroom on condition of using these blogs effectively and in the right way.
Since I am a prolific webmaster, I think that blogs are an interesting way to help students enjoying their studies and give them updates in order to enrich the content given in the classroom.
I suggest the following ideas to every teacher interested in creating a blog:
- First, try to learn a bit HTML and CSS languages.
- Then, search information about webdesign.
- Last but not least, put in your website or blog some tools such as FORUMS, GUESTBOOKS ...

I beg to differ from webmaster's suggestion to get teachers to learn a bit of HTML and CSS. These days, in the era of Web 2.0, I think it is not necessary to learn the technicalities of web design. Educators should focus their energies on experimenting with innovative pedagogies and customising instructional models to suit the students that they teach.
There are many excellent reviews on the use of blogs for teaching, try search Becta website or Singapore's educational technology website at www.moe.gov.sg/edumall
Personally, I have designed blogs to post case studies for pupils to work on; visit http://dengue2015.blogspot.com[link="http://www.moe.gov.sg/edumall"]

I agree with dennispang, nowdays the ordinary users do not need to learn HTML or PHP or any other langauge.
Cause their is a new ways for web use like blogs, forums and open sources.
It is just to know how to deal with this and a little HTML coding to be able to put your imagine.

I think a blog is a great tool. One way to use a blog is to ask a question and ask the students to express their opinions.
Since everyone can use different screen names the answer and veiws are totally confidentally.
This a great way to strike up ideas and learn what the students are thinking.
Another thing I would do in say a computere lab is to use a blog a daily jornal.

I think blogging can be an extremely useful classroom tool, as it gets students using technology for things other than video games, My Space, or AIM, and because it is an easy way to spread global perspectives. Global UR (www.globalur.com) is actually set up just for that. I bet there is something GREAT going on in each country that not many people outside that country know about, but that outsiders could undoubtedly benefit from this knowledge. Wouldn't it be interesting for young American students to express their own and hear the opinions of young African students on HIV/AIDS for example?
Blogging is also great for teachers to use amongst themselves. Ever have a night where you are struggling to come up with a lesson plan for the next day? Or can't figure out the best way to reach students with a sensitive topic? Teachers can share their experiences and plans to globalize education.

I agree that blogs to some extent are good tools for teaching. However, aside from its positive effect especially to those who have no access to expensive reading materials, it can also pose great challenges to the blog readers. Hence, these good tools for teaching can be used or abused in a grand manner.
For those who have access to the net, blogs could be good tools for modern-day alternative education at its best.
Caveat: "digital divide" is still a lingering global issue.
