On a personal level, I think it is very important. In my country, some areas do not have landlines and cellphones have been the alternative. As to cellphones becoming a fashion trend, I would reply in the affirmative, too. Brands and model types have been constantly changing.

Hey
Definately the cell phones were invented to make our lives better. Everthing created /invented has it's objective that it is meant to attain. Though cellphones are now a common feature in Third world countries aned especially in Kenya, they also have their shortcomings and most of us can do without them.
For instance where I live, some small town in Western Kenya, sometimes one has to climb a hill inorder to get the network thus to receive a call. Why should I take all that pain when I can comfortably get the message through the land line?
So the importance of the cell phone broadly depend on the location. Some of us can do without it and people do own them because they are easily pottable. That is all I can say about it's advantages since the cell hone charges here in Kenya are high.
They have also become a fashion trend sice we have a wide variety from Safaricom to Nokia.......so fashionable.

They are convenient

While using cellphones, they are convenient as people can reach you and you can reach other people very fast.
However, it is very expensive to maintain a cellphone especially in developing countries.

i think mobiles should have many other usages that just a way to talk with others
the applications that i can imagine we can add to the mobile phone other than cameras and bluetooth:
* heat temprature tool
* directions tool
* midical tool to check heart beat rate and blood pressure also sugar lever in blood. and other medical applications
also to send the results to a hospital or some one
e.g. when some one have hearattack the mobile calls some one.
* as walkitaki for short ranges
* to use is as small printer just to write memos
* as a tester for some electrical devices
* as memory media for computer ( mobile hardisk)
* as can engine sound analyser , to give idea where the error might be.
* there are many other applications in my imagination.

cellphones are really invinted to ease human communication. they make human's life connect easily. they are used for communication of people far from each other. in some point they serve its purpose but it also have bad side. there are cell phone now having camera recording and movie player. these may be use in playing nude movies and also nude pictures. these made cell phone bad.
