i have always wondered. why are balcks in "America" referred to as "African Americans", and why not as Americans like the white population. If you are going to get technical, why not call the white americans European Americans as they initially are.
peace.

i agree that there should be some way to equalize the way we all refer to eachother .. as "african americans" or european americans" or "asian americans", and that we shouldnt intentionaly exclude one group over a favorable view of another. i also think karis is correct that maybe we make too much of racial categorizations and give them more meaning than perhaps they deserve. i think its important to understand why people feel the need to catagorize and to compartmentalize various social issues. i feel the history of the united states -- with our violent creation, out of war and revolution -- continues to have its effects to this day. as a nation, we are insulated from the world, not able to fully appreciate what the rest of the world feels and prioritizes. many of 'us' even point to this as a source of pride, of our independence. in a sense we are blind to our hegemony and its impact on others. its only when all people can share in the fruits and wealth of our collective talents, and mutual respect, such a world engenders, will we have peace. can all this happen given human nature?
