prostitution is legal? is it the right of women?

upon my study of CEDAW (convention on elimination of all forms of discrimination against women) i saw an artilce stating:
"Article 6
States Parties shall take all appropriate measures, including legislation, to suppress all forms of traffic in women and exploitation of prostitution of women."
i was shocked to see that the states must work to eliminate the exploitation of prostitution only!
why shouldnt states strive to eliminate the prostitution itself which causes human traficking and all other discrimination against women.
in my opinion, to finish the cause is important and vital than eliminating the effects!
what do u say?

Its a harsh reality..whether we accept it or not that prostitution exist in each and every country, in past and in present, in some or the other forms. I do believe that as long as prostitution will remain, the associated risks and discrimination will prevail. But that does not mean that those who are into sex work for any reason are not human beings and does not have the rights as a human being should have. hence focus of any welfare state should be in both directions ....for suppression of all forms of trafficing, elimination through rehabilitation, and for protection of human rights irrespective of someone is a prostitute or not.

In my openion prostitution can never be eliminated fully from any part of this world....be it a catholic, Islamic or Hindu society....It exist everywhere, Nations which has strong laws against prostitution, even there it exist in very covert manner. It is a very complex social problem and not as eash as putting a ban on use of plastic bags....I agree that finishing the cause is important and vital than eliminating the effects... but giving first aid to a person who was hit by a speeding car is also Important then making law for speed limits...coz in this case also laws can never ensure that people will never do rash driving
what do u say??

In Indian context prostitution is not legal. Sec.8 of immoral Traffic Prevention act pertains to crime of soliciting at public place. Right to life is living with dignity and the situation where a women are exposed to commercial and sexual exploitation ultimately ends in violation of their Human rights. As far as I know, prostitution can never be legal in any nation on this earth. And that both prevention of this problem and supporting for victims are of equal importance. Each nation will focuses on the first or second method depending on their own situation.

prostitution is legal in some european countries, Germany levies a tax on its sex industry, and UK is thinking of it.
it has worth 1 billion pounds sex industry, to fulfill the requirements of the market, dont u think the "businessmen" have to indulge in women and child traficking? of course they do, so when u collect tax of sex, u r providing these "businessmen" a legal shlter.

" 25-year-old waitress who turned down a job providing "sexual services'' at a brothel in Berlin faces possible cuts to her unemployment benefit under laws introduced this year.
Prostitution was legalised in Germany just over two years ago and brothel owners – who must pay tax and employee health insurance – were granted access to official databases of jobseekers."

Prostitution is just a result of poverty and all results of a bad thing (eg, child labour, prostitution etcetera) are just bad and everyone should work to fight against poverty to end such ills. Period.

I wonder if there is a similar law dictating the prohibition of exploitation of MALE prostitutes. Anyone know? It seems to me that everyone has the right to be free from sexual exploitation, regardless of their sex/gender.
Although I'm on the fence when it comes to saying whether or not prostitution should be legalized (I can understand and argue both sides), I do want to point out that in countries where it is legalized, it sounds like its much less likely that women are exploited. Some women choose prostitution because they see it as easy money, not because they are forced, or coerced into it. There are college educated women, with good jobs who sometimes prostitute "on the side." I think this law is not speaking about women such as this. I think it is referring to women who are enslaved into prostitution, kidnapped, sold, etc. Many young girls are taken early and made to prostitute and are prohibited from quitting. This is a completely different situation from women who voluntarily choose prostitution. I do acknowledge that even when women freely choose prostitution it does open them up for exploitation, so there is a very fine line.
