According to a VNA reporter in the US, six US congressmen in the Finance Commission and Tariff Commission of the US House Representatives, on May 2, signed in a letter to the Secretary of Commerce, Carlos M. Gutierrez, expressed their worry about US’s supervision regulations to Vietnam’s textile and garment.
They considered that, if not approving the legal of the program, US government should reject it because of its discrimination.
In the letter they say, US congress approved status of permanent normal trade relations (PNTR) to Vietnam to bring benefits to US consumers and enterprises, enhance the relationship between Vietnam and US, and also create opportunities for Vietnam to develop its economy. So, interruption in trade caused by supervision to Vietnam’s import products will reduce benefit that PNTR bring to Vietnam while not benefit for US enterprises. Furthermore, it may violate some WTO agreements.
The congressmen also expressed their willing to cooperate with the US Trade Department to ensure that US economy will fully benefit when they grant PNTR for Vietnam, limit application of supervision to Vietnam’s products.
On May 11, Vice Chairman of American Apparel and Footwear Association (AAFA), in the letter he sent to US-Vietnam Trade Council (USVTC), affirmed AAFA’s viewpoint that AAFA strongly appose establishment of supervision to textile and garment imported from Vietnam and said the supervision is not supported by US’s textile and garment manufacturers.
