Global Warming : Your Action

Governments have a lot to do regarding global warming. But what about you ? On a personal level , what kind of action are you taking ? Like for instance, conserving water in your homes, composting organic waste, etc.
I'd like to know about individual responses on a very small scale, so that we may all get ideas from one another. On my part, we're installing Decentralised waste water treatment system (DEWATS) at home. Its an interesting concept. I've also written to the Commissioner here to implement it in some specific areas and in hospitals.
What ideas do you have on doing something on a personal level?

I do use the resources available in the house economically without wastage i.e. water, electricity, gas e.t.c. I also prefer cycling to driving if I am not going very far from the house. I have made it my tradition to plant at least a tree every year.-Just trying to be environmental conscious.

This's a very very big problem that we are having to face now coz it's so obviously that we can see it in daily change. I myself trying to walking as fas as possible in stead of driving.
I also save water and as 'daaketu' with a bit different, I have a small garden in front of my house, in which I grow some fruit trees ^_^ and flowers.

Its great that you've planted trees around your home. And I personally feel walking is another great idea.

Good thread! I shower only once a week. I try to use as little hot water as I can. I wash the dishes in hot water, but rinse in cold. I try to leave the car parked at home whenever I can. Many of the schools where I work are within walking or biking distance. My wife made me so happy the other day! We rode our bikes to the grocery store together, normally she insists on taking the car. Walking/biking is also helping keep my weight down.

Prieten.. you don't need to shower only once a week to conserve water!!! lol

rain water harvesting takes care of all your water needs, and you can shower once every day too.

showering once a week may not be a good idea lol. i agree that collecting rain water is a great idea when it comes to watering your garden and things like that. simple things i do around the house are washing dishes by hand, cutting back hours on tv, my family often shares a room to work so we save electricity from the lighting as well.

Another very easy thing that we can all do is to buy locally grown food. The cost (both carbon and financial) to ship fruits and vegetables from other countries has a huge impact on the environment. Buying from local farmers also improves the local economy, ensuring that they will be able to survive. And finally, buy eating with the seasons, it adds diversity to your diet, instead of limiting yourself to the same types of meals every day, month in, month out.
Of course, it may be difficult to give up some of your favourite foods, so, like everything in life, balance is critical.....you don't need to cut them out of your life completely, but at least be aware of the damage you are doing when you eat bananas (as an example for us in Canada)

Buying local foods is a great idea! when it comes to "food milage", we japanese are the worst.
japan is depending over 60% of foods to foreign countries. it's so shameful...
by the way, first action for global warming, i think, is to know how much Green House Gas like CO2 do we emit. and know in what sector can you cut the emission of GHG and what you can't cut.
then you can find the first thing to do.
we need to recognize our own impact to environmet.
you can know your own GHG emission from your drive and flight milage, and the amount of energy you've used.
and you can offset the last of your emission by taking part in Carbon Offset.
let's check the offset provider in your country

Since charity begins at home, I have learnt to make less-polluting choices - like: walking, biking, carpooling, and using mass transit, as well as limiting my traveling by using communication technologies.
Secondly, I've been planting deciduous trees to shade houses, since trees can remove fifty pounds of carbon from the air each year.
Thirdly, I have replaced my incandescent lights with energy efficient fluorescent bulbs or light fixtures.
Fourthly, I purchase energy efficient appliances that display the Energy Star Label.
Fifthly, I turn off lights, televisions and other electronic devices when not in use.
lastly, I try to live a life of voluntary simplicity and earth stewardship.

What actions do you think the government should take to decrease the pollutants that are contributing to global warming?
March 10, 2008 - 11:11 PM
|
|
I think the government of the First and Third worlds, should sign international treaties compelling them to reduce their pollutants emission. Economically wealthy countries, ought to take the lead in mitigating these pollutants, not using scientific uncertainty, about some aspects of climate change, as the cause of their dilatory approach in giving an immediate response. Clearly, entente cordiale is a sine qua non for addressing this global threat. To achieve this amity, the government of the sundry countries on the planet earth, should ratify international agreements; pass legislations, aimed at ameliorating greenhouse gas emissions.
Moreover, the government has to work overtime with its resources, to encourage alternative means of cleaner energy generation. To this end, the government should see it as its mantle, to fund sufficiently any emerging technological breakthrough - such as, fuel cell. This newly born technology needs to be refined for more down-to-earth uses. In essence, the government should encourage the development of this emerging technology, since it could replace the internal combustion engine in motor vehicles; produce electricity for commercial and domestic buildings; power small electric devices, such as: mobile phones and computers.
As a matter of necessity, the government should take major part in pollution management, by providing sewage pipes and refuse dumps far away from human habitation. The government should also set up a task force, which will ensure that pollutants from houses and factories are properly disposed of. Similarly, the government should set up a monitoring team that will visit the industrial areas and bring their reports and findings, as regards to the industrialists' allegiance to the existing environmental laws. In addition, individuals and corporate bodies wishing to open up companies and factories must be legally registered. Laws ought to be enacted, as regards to limitation of pollution emissions. The emitters of these pollutants must have mandatory limitations.
More so, the government should prohibit the use of any machinery, engine, etc., capable of sprawling greenhouse gases - like: fairly used vehicles, aircrafts, industrial plants and generators, hydroplanes and ships, motorboats and motorbikes, refrigerators, air conditioners, etc.; and encourage the use of those that are chlorofluorocarbon(cfc) free. There should also be funding by the government for the development of energy-efficient mass transit - and by extension, encouragement of urban planning that alleviates urban sprawl of toxic, and radioactive wastes.

Global Warming : Your Action

there are a lot of problems facing the world today due to mankind's industrialisation & carelessness. the best way to bring out a change is to carry out awareness campaigns through media like the newspapers, through TV programs & radio.
the international leaders are to carry out the change globally through various agreements & compromises to protect the world like
1) planting trees in every space available to cut out the percentage of greenhouse gases
2) a major concern today is the rising plastic waste which is evident in seashores. such plastic waste can be ridden by organising groups to collect the plastic waste. moreover the use of plastic should be reduced which is very necessary.this can be done throug cloth bags, jute bags,oxo-biodegaradable bags.
last but not the least the poor is getting poorer & the rich is getting richer today.
those poor people can now only be helped by the world's wealthy groups & the people worldwid.
i wish all the problems will be over
