certainly very much since that´s the only source of information the vast majority of people has.

nothing to add more to this.

you might want to check out the work of noam chomsky called "manufacturing consent" ...

take care & all the best for your project,

If this helps any, some of the ways in which the media affect our understanding of events are:

media biases - the editorial slant of the paper. Media ownership, advertisement clients and other factors affect the bias of the newpaper towards stories. For example, the National Post is notoriosly bias towards the Liberal government. It is no coincidence that Conrad Black, the owner of the Post, among other papers, personally dislikes the PM.

Filters - The media engage in what's called filtering the news from the public. What this means is that they selectively use facts and information to convey a perspective of a story, which in many cases may be considered desirable for the paper. CNN's coverage on the conflict in Iraq is more than enough example of this.

Gatekeeping - Because the amount of news far exceeds the amount of coverage a paper can offer, and our interests can tolerate, the media decide which stories infact do become stories. Poverty, hunger and disease have been rampant for years throughout Africa, though it wasn't until aid organizations began photographing children and babes in arms and presenting these images on television that the mainstream public became financially sympathetic towards them.

These are just factors. Media ownership in North America is concentrated in the hands of a select few individuals. There is very limited variety and varying perspectives which are available. Moreover, media corporations have merged to create an even greater conglomerate....

This has been a lot. I hope this helps. You're only 13 right? If you read the newspaper or ever plan to I encourage you to continue pursuing this reality behind the news. It is quite revealing.

Later,
Jacob

when you look at our media coverage (CNN, MSNBC as well as our Canadian National News coverage) it maily focusses on tactics and heroism. On the other hand Europe, Asisa and the Muslim countries cover other aspects such as the human cost, the wars effect on the people of Iraq, and the video of the casualties of war.
