What do You think of Kenya...?
May 3, 2007 - 06:04 AM

I was born and bred up in this beautiful magnificient country of culture and wild animals. Kenya, is beautiful thogh eaten up by corrupt individuals. Kenya is peaceful, while the sourrounding countries are ever at war. What is that Kenya has that makes it easy for nearly all big HEAD QUATERS to based there?

I think the best thing that happened to our country is our diversity. The Swahilis from the coast, the Kalenjins, the Luos, the Gabbras, Borans, the Kambas, Pokots. Have you noticed in Kenya, or the world in general, that the regions with the worst clashes are those that have two equally powerful tribes(Hutus and Tutsis in Rwanda, etc) ? I think the fact that we are sooo many (52?) makes it difficult to get people to divide into two distinct groups that would do battle with each other. Just imagine Somalis recruiting Kikuyus to join them in a war against their enemiesbig grin !!

But in Kenya we see a political tussle between the largest communities which personally don't think is great because it will eventually blow.

Although I don't see that happening, even if it does blow then it will be just one more 'clash' in Kenya which the rest of Kenya will appear helpless about. If Kenya can be called a peaceful country with the Mt. Elgon clashes, the Turbi and Wagalla massacres, the conflicts in Mathare and at the coast then if there was one more clash what difference does it make to our 'peace'??Or are some people more equal than others?

Anyway we must accept that whether it blows or not. If election didn't necessarily have to depend on wooing the community with the largest population but on merit we would be talking about something else right now. I'm ashamed to say that the reality is, voting along tribal lines goes on even in our public universities-the higher learning institution where we are supposed to open our minds. A kikuyu/gema/mega votes for a kikuyu even if he has never heard of him before, a luo votes for a luo, the rest form unlikely mergers at least to gather numbers because they know in this election its all about what combination of tribes will give you the largest number (This does not apply to everybody of course, there are some brave people who do not conform.) We should look at the bigger picture,we are whatever ethnic group we are but first we are Kenyans. We haven't arrived there yet and the way things are it will certainly will take time for that idea to become ingrained -the past generation may have missed it- but we and our children can nurture it.

Our diversity is a blessing because we can learn so much from each other but to get that blessing we have to alter the way we think.

sad

Kenya is a beatiful country with hard working citizens but my biggest worry is lack of developement since we got our independent. We have been devided among tribal line that aint good for our generation. The older generation have trained and mentored us to be so. We concentrate much of our energy on the other tribe making sure they never develop. But all in all we the young people are the ones who need to change all thisby putting aside our differences and implement projects that support all tribes. Second if we dont now then we might not have the future we want, like the Americas President is protecting the future which he might not be in by fighting evry country that oppose his ideas, think about this what will happen if one day the middle east countries which hate the Americas unite "World war three and the future they are fighting for will it be there?.
Think about.Thanks
