What happened?

I was just thinking abut this the other day, so I thought I'd bring it up for discussion. I saw a documentary recently about how people from different parts of the world used to feel about America(ns), and how they feel now. I was just curious about your point of view. Do you feel differently about America? What changed your opinions? Also, if anyone has any ideas, what do you think would have to happen to change your views?

well, there are a lot of interesting an intelligent people in america I've been very glad to have met and whom I highly respect. But if I am to make a broad sterotypical generalization(how I feel about america as opposed to a well thought out rational perspectice) I tend to think of those people as the exceptions. More often than not I think of america as an egotistical ignorant irresponsible loud mouth. This comes from your media, and from the americans I've met.
For it to change in my mind...America would have to stop yelling at people when they visit a foreign country and the people there don't happen to understand english, explain to me why when i cross the border in buffalo or Niagra everything suddenly looks run-down, get over yourself, be less uptight and focused on being perfect and accept your faults but don't go the other extreme either and praise idiocy, when you share a room with someone don't come in at 3 am and turn on the lights and the noisy fan(when it is not even hot) while drunkinly stumblin about, Stop checking yourself out in the mirror, chat and mingle with some of the other people at the party not just the hot chick with the big boobs you want to bang.
of course I would say a lot of this for my country too.

Don't get me wrong, I know many Americans and even have family living in the US, but when I think of America I think of a self-centered nation. In grade 9 geography at my high school we watched an episode from a reality tv show where a guy (who is Canadian) goes up to Americans on the street and asks them questions about Canada. One of the questions he asked a randomer was "How large would you say Canada is?" the man replied "well, I'd say about half the size of Texas" I think it might've surprised the man to know that Canada is larger than the USA. It makes me sad to think that many Americans know very little about their neighboring country, yet here in Canada most high schools offer an American history course. I think that Americans should stop being so wrapped up in their own nation and should pay attention to the other nations that they share the planet with.

Does anyone even want to take that class? I like it, but I don't think I could name anyone in my high school who would take U.S. history if it wasn't mandatory! Maybe that says something about our youth - I don't know.

well i think its the american media who gives other ppl the bad impression about them
i knew a lot of americans in egypt they are very welcoming ppl and its always fun to party with
about that texas issue its ignorance yeah but to be honest if you asked any one in the streets of any country there is a probability of 50% that he wouldnt say
the whole egypt is a more or less the size of texas btw and thats a fact
to tell you the truth in egypt i heard once a discussion between 2 persons wondering whether the capital of spain is paris or berlin so ignorance is everywhere not just a specific country
also the americans are too proud of themselves as americans in a way sometimes get to arrogancy it happened to me more then once while askin some ppl where do you come from and they answer from great america with a big look on their face like and where do you come stinky and that look feels bad if you know what i mean makin you feel inferior or something

I think the fact that you are asking this question, already provides an answer.

I appreciate the initiatve of the young lady for the positive attitude of others about her motherland. It is really a patriotic and democratic endeavour simultaneously. She will be able to harvest the benefit of this initiative as she will grow and responsible position in her career. This discussion is useful for others too as it offers an opportunity to express their feeling and provides knowledge about America

America...hmmmm
I havent been there but I've studied their history in university. Some of them are ignorant and live in their own bubble, like its only them in this world. There was a documentary by an Arab channel asking Americans things after 9/11 like whats Islam, What do people do..etc and OMG at the answers they've got. As much as it was a good laugh its sad. Its sad to see the power in the hands of the ignorant.
The problem is what the media shows is different from what people are. I've some American friends who are open minded and educated, but are they a majority in the US? I don't know.
Then you get those weird shows like Paris Hiltion & Nicole Ricche or that "Laguna beach" and other shows that shows how spoilt, selfish and ignorant these people are. I mean they wine about things many other youth could only dream of having. They're sucked into their parties, friends, boyfriends, sleeping around ...etc world.
What irritates me is that how America feels it has the right to interfere with any country's politics. They preach for democracy, equal rights and civilization when they don't practice it in their own country.
I dont want America to be my "big brother" I can do things on my own because I can think for myself.
No offense to any Americans

There was a time when I strongly disliked the average American, but this feeling evolved into a general caustic misanthropy as I met more people from other countries.

I am not to crazy about american politics at the time and see a lot of injustice, but that is general. I know a lot of wonderful caring americans and that is what matters to me.

Thanks you guys, I really appreciate your opinions. And it's true, a lot of Americans do have a terrible misunderstanding of the rest of the world. It really bums me out that so many people think Americans are stupid, arrogant, spoiled-rotten, self-centerd, mean-harted people who don't really care about anyone else. As for Paris Hilton and "Laguna Beach," that's really not the reality here (despite the propaganda ).
