There's more to the story; Hatamkhalid has a thread going about it. The marriage wasn't consecrated for years.
On the poll, I voted 16+. Why? There's really no difference between 16 and 18. People don't seem to be much more adult after that until some time in their early 20's.
Just my thoughts.

I think 18+. Because anyone younger isn't mature enough. I'd rather people thought of marriage after 20. Anyone younger than eighteen is still a child in my eyes.

Marriage is not a boyfriend and girlfriend type of relationship, its a life time institutional learning relationship; so one must be ready to embark on such before going into it.
If you ask me i will say 25yrs of age should be the acceptable age. At that age both the man and woman must have grown to know the acts of being married. THIS IS MY VIEWS

Well, if you are asking about present world then i will go with 30+ coz at this age a man is a complete man with everything and for a women it can be 25+ coz she can complete her education and gets some experience as well, either job experience or world experience.
But if you are asking it about the past world then i will vote for less than 16 even less than 10 coz at that time people were both physically and mentally strong !

Matt, everything is changing. it is clear. We have lots of things to do nowadays, at least we are surrounded by technology. We want to do career, to have more education.... And these things take time. People delay marriage. It is not strange now. I believe that If you were born in 600's, you would think more diffirent. Because , at that time life wasn't like today...
It is disturbing to judge Muhammed(pbuh)...

I can't imagine getting married at age 9 although in a week i'm turning 18 and i still can't imagine getting married any time soon. I believe that to marry sombody means that one has to be mature enough to accept the responsibility of marrying another person. I'm not sure that at 18 I myself am old enoungh to marry. I can't even imagine getting married at 9.

this is a question that provokes sooo much bias and discrimination. each culture has their own answer and each answer is correct.
westerners mature very very late in life (20's) while in developing nations, young people are already mentally mature and handling much of the domestic/economic responsibilities by age 15.

i say marry when you and society agrees that you are mature. this differs in every society.
in botswana, for example a young lady of age 15 is already used to cooking for the family and bringing in income. she is already emotionally and mentally mature. thus society deems her fit for marriage.
while in america, teens are quite immature and do all sorts of rebellious actions. thus, society says they are too young to get married.

I agree with Africhika. I think it has a lot to do with the average lifespan of people in a country and the types of resposibilities young people have to take on early in their lives.

16? NO! I'm 16. And I'm shure it's not the age for marriage at all. at this age average girl just begin understanding the life. she can't make decision on which all her life will depend. and she is naiive. she can easily fall in love with just beautiful and macho man.

I'm 22 and I'm still not ready for marriage, I'm still learning who I am! At 16, there is no way I could have made such a choice. At the same time though, I think culture has a lot to do with it, in certain cultures I think a 16 year old may be more mature. It is all based on life experience I guess and in the US, most people don't have the opportunity to learn about themselves until they are independent and for us that doesn't happen until we are at least 18, for some, it is even later. On another side, I think a 16 year old is mature enough to graduate high school and move on to college, or independent studies rather than high school. Maybe if that change happened earlier, an 18 year old would be old enough and independent enough to marry.
