Good question indeed! All through my life experience, violent or the juvenile student are making a cry for help. Since many institutions are not equipped with the necessary equipments to help them, their cry is ignored which at an extreme turns to complete hatred to society and all around them as we witnessed in Virginia Tech.
for that matter to send them away is not the solution if we can help them.

Yes solely as they hinder others learning experiences. No it isnt fair on the vilent student but then they have an obvioius problem and it needs to be solved.

I think that they should be removed from the mainstream education system because they just cause more trouble than they are worth there. However, I do not think that they should be forsaken. They deserve special attention in separate learning environments until they can prove that they are able to safely reenter the mainstream learning system.
That's just my opinion though, and I am eager to hear others.

Unquestionably.
The problem with educational systems in the USA, is that despite all the talk of differentiation, we still try to churn out cookie cutter students. We aren't really interested in life-long learners, If we were, we'd stop wasting time and resources on "high-stakes" testing, and begin to use our resources to help our students.
Yes, violent students must be removed for the safety of others, but alternatives, MANY alternatives to mainstream education must be created. It is the DUTY of the world to educate all of the children, but all children do not learn the same way, and do not have the same needs. It's about differentiation; it's about diversity.

Yes, they should--if a student displays consistent violent behavior, for the safety of other students they should be expelled from school.
BUT that doesn't mean the end of their education. If anything they should be sent to a school which can help them improve as people while continuing their education.

dear nelson
In INDONESIA---it depend on the VIOLENT.
If they use drug abuse---I can guarantee they will espell soon.
If they just join gang fight and do not hurt people---maybe it still can be forgiven.
yah...depend on the problems

It depends on whether they are defending themselves of picking fights. If they are picking fights they should definitely be expelled. No question. It is important to the safety of both the children and the teachers. There are schools I know of in Canada where violent students are sent for specialized instruction with teachers that are specially trained to handle violent situations. I think that is the best solution.

expelling violent students is not always the best way to resolve. one student may expelled.. then another is expelled.. many violent students expelled.
then, to think of is.. where are those students go?? no one help them improving their self. there may a risk that they will make a gang, and... doing more bad things, even more worst than ever.
i do not think, expelling is the best. we must resolve it, not put it to another place... the best things may lead them to be a better student.

I agree with you in that finding the root cause(s) of violent behaviour may be necessary in controlling it, but regardless of the reasons why an individual acts violently, is there any excuse for such behaviour? I would have to disagree that it is not the fault of the individual.
However, it is very easy to unecessarily direct blame in these situations and referring back to the titled question, I feel individuals who repeatedly use violence to the extent of disrupting the learning environment for others should not only be removed from school, but also given the opportunity outside of mainstream schooling to learn how to adapt their behaviour so that in the long term they become respectful and law abiding citizens.
