Clean Hands on World Leaders
April 23, 2007 - 03:35 PM

Do you think it's possible for the leader of a large/powerful country to have completely clean hands? I believe (just my opinion) that the hands of George W. Bush are very dirty with the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, but I was wondering if it's possible to lead a country like the United States and not be responsible/accountable for death and destruction in the world. Is that just part of the job?

While death and destruction is not just part of the business, it is highly unlikely the hands of a leader of a superpower like the United States can be clean. Therefore, the power of such a leader must be as much restricted as not to allow such a leader to cause death and destruction at his discretion.

Great point. Do you believe that the current US constitution gives too much power to the president?

It depends on how you interpret the Constitution. Bush wields more power than he should, but whether this is constitutional or not is a matter of interpretation. Bush himself thinks it is, but not everyone. Recently Bill Clinton, in an interview to CNN, made a good point that I did not know before. I thought the Congress authorized Bush to declare war on Iraq in 2002. Clinton made it clear that the resolution, in fact, emphasized that Bush could declare war should all diplomatic means fail. From that point of view, Bush is wielding power not granted by the Constitution as he violated the Congressional resolution.

To speak in general, I think, the power of the US president should be even more circumscribed. I cannot help reeling that Bush is a commander-in-chief.
