slavery
April 11, 2003 - 01:38 AM

In the early seventeen hundreds americans brought africans fron africa and put them to slavery ay cotton plantatations and other things that the americans could do themselves. That is probably what started the whole slavery things when europe saw that the U.S. had gotten slaves they wanted to have some too, so they decided to go get slaves too. And then slaves started to be shipped off and then be sold like animals. It was truly disgusting then the slaves heard about Canada where there was no slavery allowed. They started to run away from the United States and going to Canada on the way they had help from a pretend railway.
but nothing has really changed for there is still slavery around it has not stopped but there isn't slavery in the United States it is now around in the lower countries. When will it end? One can make a difference!

Everyone thinks:U.S.A is bad because they had slavery...but i guess a lot of people don't know that Canada also supported this idea. just because we stopped earlier doesn't make it any better. But yes, i don't agree on this slave business. If they want to get something done-you don't need a slave to do it for you.All you need is to set your mind to it and you will finish the job. I think a big reason for this slave thing was because it was the "in" thing to do.The more slaves you had-the more respect you had. This was a sort of possesion thing. I think people should not be considered an object. Slaves hardly ever got reconization or a pat on the back. What they got was a whip not a pat. What i think is even worse was that slaves were kidnapped. I don't think slavery has been abolished. Even though it was a law not to keep slaves- i bet a lot of teens and young adults have their own slave. These slaves are called parents. Shouldn't you do everything in your will to please them and to help them out? They did bring you in to the world. But instead a lot of us adolences don't think about them. All we want from them is our clean clothes, money and food.We should be cooking for them. They already have to work so I think we should help them out a bit more and to let them relax once in a while. This does not aply to all of us. i know about children who help cook and cleann and that's what we should do.I'm not trying to teach you people to be nice good children because- i admit, i do this often. I throw all my dirty clothes in a hamper and let my mom do all the work. The only thing/chore i actually do is clean up around the computer whjich i sit in front a lot. It's not like we mean to treat them like slaves, but we do anyways.doesn't it seem like they really are our slaves? we tell them to bring us to teh movies or to go on a shopping trip with us-to enjoy themseelves and to use thier money at the same time. Or some of us are even better- we don't make them come and walk. we let them sit in the food court and read some boring book for 2 hrs while we use thier hard-earned cash. Now back to the subject= Slavery. How did they escape and why. They obviously ran away because they were treated badly. I think taht if slaves were given more food than a can of old stale rice that fell on teh floor they might now have ran away to Canada. I feel proud to be canadian because we helped these poor african-american people to live the life they want-free. But how did we do it? We now get to the point to notice that not all of the U.S is mean and cold-hearted.There were plenty of people taht helped slaves. But what is truly amazing is that they risked thier lives to save another. I'm pretty sure that i wouldn't do this if it meant that i had to die. Wouldn't it be horrible dying because you helped slaves cross the border into canada? into freedom. I hope there will never be something like what happened some time ago again. If it does- will you be a conductor?

These days, we think "Oh, la di dah, slavery has been abolished, we live in a beautiful world," and we're sitting there in our Nike runners which we all know perfectly well are made by ten year old girls in some filthy factory in a third world country, sold to the company by their destitute parents when they were tiny children. Or maybe we're enjoying our freedom by kicking around a soccer ball proudly bearing the stamp which declares it was made without child labour. Sorry mate, but a little boy with holes in his hands sewed that label on.

It is the saddest thing I can imagine, that children all over the world are exploited like this. Paid something ridiculous like 50c a day, sleeping under a table in a workroom full of other malnourished kids, fed next to nothing, there's no way this is paid work, it is slavery and must be stopped! These mega-corporations make millions because of these kids, who have no option than to work in apalling conditions for next-to-nothing. Meanwhile, Tiger Woods and Serena Williams (no offence guys but you're PROMOTING SLAVERY!), get paid quite a few of those millions wear and use gear that was made by a kid just like me sitting in a sweatshop somewhere in the wops.

Slavery still exists, and is alive, well and living in the world today, but we CAN do something about it! If you only buy things that were made locally to your area, not a big brand name, then not only are you supporting local businesses in your community, but you are keeping your money away from child labour. We have to send the 'not cool' message to the people who use children to produce their product on a massive scale at a minimum cost, and it's not just big labels like Nike. It's whatever your local equivelent of The Warehouse is (Think big store with cheap, cheap stuff all with the Made In China label), where all the goods are imported cheaply from Asia, and other places around the world, and sold for such low prices that there is NO WAY they were made by people on a decent wage. It is slavery, and people like us benefit from it every day.

A43BLACK, slavery does exist. We just don't see it in the wealthier countries that some of us a priveliged enough to live in.
