How a Filipina views an American

I think Filipinos love the Americans and whole white population in general. Its just depressing that this love towards the whites can be traced due to inferiority complex embedded in our culture. Skin whiteners are the best sellers, english is one of our national language, you are considered a beauty if you have a white porcelain skin. They are just few of the various instances where you can see how Filipinos adore the Americans. Well, we were under American colonization for almost 50 years.
I have met some Americans in the university, they are great & warm people. I think we cannot really judge them as a whole because each individual is different although they belong to the same race. Some of my friends who came to United States said that Americans are rude and very discriminating towards them. Well, give them a chance to show they are good people. Everyone should be prejudged as great people unless proven otherwise

I am American (actually a true american, because I am a Native american from the Navajo tribe) but there are times when I've been embarrassed of my citizenship on many social occasions because of the antics the american government dishes out to the rest of the world. but I am proud, its not so bad to be american. I would describe an american as Hearty, Loyal, sometimes very ignorant, and not to mention selfish! but there are many many people like me here in the U.S. who have alot to offer in terms of intellect and goodwill. My advice that I would give is to not stereotype all americans into a group, because like so many have said, we are all part of humanity, one species...and we are in this struggle together, the struggle we call life.

i so agree with you. there are times where i'm watching the news and i cant help but cringe at some of the actions of our country. i sometimes feel like the black sheep of a huge, ignorant family (no offence, other Americans. the very fact that you're on this website excludes you from the "Ignorant" part)
it's great that you mentioned being Navajo. i once saw a shirt that said "the original founding fathers" and had pictures of Geronimo, Sitting Bull, Red Cloud, And Crazy horse ...but that's a whole different discussion. you should create a post in the "culture and Identity" section.

Thank you for your kind words, I know its crazy that we have to put up with the Bush Administration's stupid activities all the time...atleast there are still people who take the time to think about these things, like us ofcourse .

What is an American?
To be an American is to be... But in the reality of the current world, which is chaotic, to be an American is to have the power to change it, to turn it all around, at least in a minute insignificant way, to change the world.

An American can be of African origin, or Chinese, Japanese, German, Jewish, Arab, Persian or French origin.
An American can be from Italy or Pakistan - about a quarter are Latin American.
This is a country of immigrants - I heard someone above from the Phillipenes talk about Americans as White people - only about half of Americans are white, so perhaps you are thinking of us in the wrong way.
This country is a big melting pot. I would say it is impossible to describe an "American" without stereotyping.

People are so different from each other so I don't believe that an average American really exists.

An American (the modern American) is an immigrant who was born in the US or granted citizenship by the US authority.
Like the rest of the human race, there are the good, the bad....and the ugly.

An American from an african child's viewpoint is simply a white human with long curly hair,

Describe the average American, in as much or as little detail as you wish.
You know, William, I have studied American studies for the last four years, and I had to try to explain what an American is more times than I can ever count. But still I cannot answer it. The best description of an American for me is this: a human being living in the United States!
Arslan
I think that's the best description out of all the descriptions I've read. It's better to leave it at that before going into stereotypes.
