Unfortunately I don't have any answers to this question. I just wanted to write and give my condolences to the students at Virginia Tech and their friends and families. These school shootings always make me so sad, and I wish I had the answer as to how to stop them.

I work in an educational institution, and I can't imagine what it would be like to have the sense of security and community destroyed by a school shooter. I pray that it never happens here, or at any other school.

The school completely mishandled it - the second shooting was 2 hours after the first -

in those two hours the school should have had SWAT teams combing the area and canceled classes -

one student put it this way - http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/ap/nation/4720511.html

"I think the university has blood on their hands because of their lack of action after the first incident," said Billy Bason, 18, who lives on the seventh floor of the dorm.

"If you had apprehended a suspect, I could understand having classes even after two of your students have perished. But when you don't have a suspect in a college environment and to put the students in a situation where they're congregated in large numbers in open buildings, that's unacceptable to me."

this is the largest school shooting in US history. It has almost 3 times the victims of Columbine.

I would like to see some serious gun control legislation roll out of this.

in Katrina N.O. it was also clearly a problem as you had well armed criminals firing upon police and even firemen.

I don't understand why the "right to bear arms" needs to extend to simi automatics and other heavy weapons.

people have the right to a hand gun for home security - and maybe a hunting rifle - but that is really as far as it should go.

"What were the reasons?"

- Clearly the kid was out of his mind, I don't think he was raitonal enough to have a reason - but witnesses said he seemed to be looking for his girlfriend -

so who knows, maybe she left him or cheated on him and he decided to take his anger out on everyone and anyone.

"I just wanted to write and give my condolences to the students at Virginia Tech and their friends and families."

amen.

It is clear terrorism

Instead of sending troops to wage wars on other countries, Bush should fight terrorism in US schools.

This is result of the insane gun culture - culture of violent in today's world. Especially in America. Glorification of violence by media and politics has lot to be blamed.

I would say the today's situation had been understood clearly by leaders such as Dr. King, its very unfortunate.

I share my condolence with these innocent victims, may they attain Nibbana.

The shooter was identified as a last-year South Korean student in his major in English language at Virginia Tech.

Udara - you do reolize that this kid grew up in South Korea.

so the idea that this results from America's crazy gun culture is a bit misplaced.

he didn't go on this rampage because he saw a movie -

he was obviously having a pyschotic episode.

I don't think guns should be so readily accessible.

but again the kid grew up in South Korea - not the US - so he is a product of South Korean culture more than American.

sad

a shocking incident, must be condemned, may souls of the killed students lie in peace!

the govt. and schools must try thier best, not to mishandel such a situation again.

somehow, the system is liable for such incidents. guns are available, and manner of use is prescribed in Movies. so must avoid all this

Learn the facts of this case. The guy who committed this horrific act was not of American culture.

Too bad that facts clash with your opinions. Will that affect your worldview or something?

Luke - he was a permanent resident living here since he was 8. he wrote a several page letter before doing it. we have seen too many of these psychotic episodes right from columbine to the amish shootout last year, so guns being easily accessible is a bit of a problem. am not trying to put the entire blame on the 'gun culture' or hollywood gloriflying violence. Sure it contributes to it, but the movies are made with the assumption that people are sane enough to differentiate between entertainment and reality. besides as long as there is demand, there will always be supply,...

I am not blaming American culture here at all.

But

No country tries to ape America more than South Korea. I have been there and have seen how every young South Korean tries to be as American as possible.

America has an immense influence on the country.

This is really sad.
I hope everyone gets the courage to move on ....

What can be done to prevent such things in future.
What if the guns are not made available to people so easily ?
things would have been definitely better today .
sad

Following are some excerpts from the video Cho had mailed to NBC.

Was this guy bullied and harrassed by others as a kid?

[link="http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070419/ap_on_re_us/dc_virginia_tech_cho_video_2"]

didn't have to do it. I could have left. I could have fled. But now I am no longer running. If not for me, for my children and my brothers and sisters that you (expletive). I did it for them."

• "You just loved to crucify me. You loved inducing cancer in my head, terror in my heart and ripping my soul all this time."

• "You have vandalized my heart, raped my soul and torched my conscience. You thought it was one pathetic boy's life you were extinguishing. Thanks to you, I die like Jesus Christ, to inspire generations of the weak and the defenseless people."

• "Do you know what it feels like to be spit on your face and have trash shoved down your throat? Do you know what it feels like to dig your own grave? Do you know what it feels like to have your throat slashed from ear to ear? Do you know what it feels like to be torched alive? Do you know what it feels like to be humiliated and be impaled upon a cross and left to bleed to death for your amusement?

You have never felt a single ounce of pain your whole life. And you want to inject as much misery in our lives because you can, just because you can. You had everything you wanted. Your Mercedes wasn't enough, you brats. Your golden necklaces weren't enough, you snobs. Your trust fund wasn't enough. Your vodka and cognac wasn't enough. All your debaucheries weren't enough. Those weren't enough to fulfill your hedonistic needs. You had everything."
