women and human rights in solomon islands

In Solomon Islands women are at the fore-front on issues such as human rights and how it affects women. In Solomon Islands, there is the general tendency that women are denied most of the important fundamental rights that are important for the advancement of women. For instance, in the village most girls' rights to education are curtailed because of the customary notion that education is only for boys. Hence, one can infer that to date there is much that need to be done to lift such abuses in order for women to have a fair standing in the society.*

On Saturday 14 April 2007, the Commissioner of the Solomon Islands Electoral Commission had the chance to talk to the Solomon Islands Law Students Association. He is here in Vanuatu for the annual Pacific Island Countries meeting to deal with issues about elections.
When asked by a student about his standpoint to make sure women in Solomon Islands are given an affirmative action in terms of legislative measures to make sure a quota is placed in the laws of Solomon Islands, he mentioned that this is not yet the time to take such measures. It is important that women in Solomon Islands build there capacity. Hence, it is important that capacity building should be well founded before taking such a measure.

During that informal meeting, which is chaired by the Solomon Islands Law Students Association President - Mr. James Kaboke, most students particurlarly, the boys affirmed the standpoint taken by the Commissioner for the Solomon Islands Electoral Commission.
However, the females did not say anything. They just sat quietly. During the question and comments time not even one female student would like to stand-up to say anything about the quotas.

Thank you very much for that standpoint. It is important that women are educated (i am talking in the context of Solomon Islands) because if we are to talk about development women are the mothers of development.Tthey need to build their capacities in order to tackle development challengences...Amen.

Women rights is culturally controversial especially in society like Solomon Island in respect of Human right.
There is a need for a wider touch to the general community to ease the cultural mentally of the superiority of men.****

Hello out there. Haven't the elders seen the big silver birds in sky? Don't they have boxes that talk or even boxes that talk and show pictures?
When are they going to decide that the time is right to give women equal rights or even one right, the right to a full education. That way, they stand a chance of arguing for themselves.
I know that Chairman Mao, when asked about the French Revolution said, 'It is too early to tell' but this is ridiculous. Cannot the plight be put before the UN. Then again the UN isn't that effective, so I guess you are going to have to fight this your selves.
I wish you good luck. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jo Devizes knows a womens website that is rather good.
