Saying NO to Selling Canada's Water!
April 7, 2003 - 09:39 AM

I don't think we should sell our water because in the future water is going to be like oil. In Canada we have about 30 million people living and one person needs about 20-40 litres of water a day. So we have to supply at least 20-40 litres of fresh water to each person living in Canada. If we just sell our water then there would be water shortages. It has been said that water will be "liquid gold" in the future. So that's why I think we should just keep it for ourselves. If money is an issue then Canada can sell it's other materials such as lumber, and minerals etc. 97.5% of the water on earth is salt water and 2.5% is locked up in ice caps, which leaves just a small portion which is left for drinking. So we have to be careful with our water, because without water we can't live but we can live without money. That's why we shouldn't sell our water to any other country, just for money.

Water WARs

I disagree with you Charanjit.
You stated in the future that water is going to be like oil. This means that countries will have conflicts between eachother and wars. A good example of this is the War in Iraq. Many people's lives are being washed away because of the war in Iraq. If Canada does not sell their water, they might face a war and it might take people's lives. A war happening in Canada will mean a downturn in the economy which will also have a great impact on Canadians.

I disagree with Arren. If we do not sell our water Canada's economy will not go down, because Canada can sell other goods and services go make their economy go up.

well i think we should sell our water, and we shouldnt. Should: there are other countries such as africa, and other dry countries like that that hardly get rain and ppl are dying from not gettin enuff water or food.
Shouldt: This is kinda hard to say, but jus bare wid me. wut if our water runs out?!, then wut are we gunna do, then we're gunna have to pay other countries to ship there water 2 us! and give up our money, then we're gunna be the onez that have ppl drying from no food and water.

Hey Charanjit!! All I have to say is that water is definitely a lot more valuable than oil. You can live without water for about one month tops. How long do YOU think we can live without oil??!!? That's all I have to say.

I disagree with Arren, if Canada were to sell it's water; other countries would also ask for water. What would Canada do if they can't supply the amount of water needed? The opposing country would then say that Canada is not treating them equally. Wars will still be started.
The effects of selling our water can be gigantic. Industries can go out of buisness and also this would affect the ecosystms of Canada. =/

I Disagree to charanjit

i strongly disagree to Charanjit. Canadians are wasting so much water and use more than they really need. If we start to sell the water and tell Canadian citizens that water is running out, they will realize that water is valuable and mustn't be wasted. Thats why i believe that sell water will not only help others, but teach canadians not to waste water.

I don't get the people saying yes to selling water. Some guy said that we are wasting water. Okay, so let's assume that we are "wasting" the H2O, why don't we just leave it that way then? If we sell it, then sudden decreased amount of fresh water is a problem to the Canadians.

in my opinion, we should sell our water to third world countries like Africa, etc. instead of selling to us, i mean they can buy their own water or spend money on researching how to find water sources, water is not always there, it will disappear, i mean freshwater, obviously, there all a lot of salt water out there and they will be recycled through the hydrolic cycle, but freshwater is really valuable and is considered as liquid gold. I think Canadians should reduced their water usage and benefit some water into some 3rd world people, they really need it, water is the chance of living...if we are not to sell to us, we succeed in making a decision, not only we would destroy our own country because the ecosystem is ruined as stephen said. we could be running out of water! we have to spend gigantic amounts of money into filtering salt water to survive, our freshwater is not renewable, the government should take into more accounts of that, freshwater is like gold, even more important than gold in today's society, i mean what do you need gold for, when the world is out of important stuff like water, gold is useless, money is useless, if we dont have survival things like water to sustain life, and we have to think about wildlife too, they suffer from our stupidity just because we waste water and yet we sell them in high prices to us when they can contribute money in finding its water source!

I strongly agree with you. Canadians are using 350L of water in a day while people from other countries only use 20-40L. Why can't Canadians do the same instead of wasting so much water? If the government were to take a lot of water from Canadians, it would definitly teach them not to waste so much water.

Is it Waste or just different?

Does Canada use more water because of being more wasteful or because of the industries in the Canadian economy? Just because some countries use less water, energy, etc per capita than another does not mean they are more efficient or environmentally friendly. A country in abject poverty will use less resources per capita than a wealthy one, but that is not due to higher economic or environmental effectiveness or efficiency.
