Re: Coporate Social Responsibility in Developing Countries

There is indeed a need for corporates to make giving a genuine gesture and it is diappointing that they have abused the system of corporate social responsibility to further their own profits, therefore the question remains, what is to be done to ensure that corporates do not abuse the system?

Corporate Social responsibility is one of the most impotant thing particularly in our developing countries. Most of the companies making millions in our developing countries are not fulfilling their social responsibilities and channel the fund to some unprofitable avenue, that's one of the reasons why most of the developng country are still behind in most of the recent technology especially Africa.
We have to make some of this corporate bodies realise that they have their own art to play in the developing of the community and neighbourhood. Now, that Nigerian Banking sector is one of the most active Corporate entity in Nigeria now, they have to fulfill their obligation and grow the country if we really want to move from this stage ofdevelopng nation to a developed Nation.

I think, the main social responsibility of the corporate world in the developing country is treat and pay their employees fairly. Give them the benefits they deserve. I believe it's a hypocrisy to do "exta" and propaganda or tax-deductible charity when their own workers/employees are suffering for maltreatment and unfair wage. It happens in my country. Jobs now are mostly contractual so that the corporations can change their workers every six months which mean that the workers are not entitled of benefits and compensations.
The main responsibility does not start from outside but from within the company or institution.

I came across an interesting practice during some research. The Malaysian Stock Exchange has provided a CSR framework for public companies' shares to be traded in the Stock Exchange.
You can see this info here
While not mandatory, plcs at the Malaysia Stock Exchange are pushed forward to disclose what they do regarding environmental and social issues.
I found this development amazing. Otherwise, some studies have shown that companies that have a better score in terms of CSR (first and foremost the environment) make as much or more profits (returns on equities) than other companies (dinosaurs).
This is somewhat encouraging!

One thing of note is the fact that some establishments use what is called CSR as a tool of cheap advertisment, I believe that organisation whose CSR activities is situated around some few miles (say 3 miles) from their official location is not commited to CSR advertising their product or services and in fact doing it cheaply.
