Racism among yourselves
April 9, 2007 - 12:19 PM

What’s even more degrading is Africans referring to each other as blacks... History shows this demeaning and racist reference to Africans was after reconstruction. An hour or two in a library would reveal this truth.

The French, British and many others after entering the interior of Africa after the 18th century called the African negro in their language and thereafter in America black, colored etc.,

But in Spain during the 8th century he was refereed to as “Moor” meaning African. Greeks called him scorched or dark skinned.

Some racist people, say that God is white, and some opressed people with dark skin, say that God is black. This is the most stupid thing I have ever heard. God has no color. God created people with different skin colors. If you are white, you could have been created black, or vice versa. That doesn't make anyone better than the other. In Quraan, God tells us that a white is not better than a black, an Arab is not better than a non-Arab except by faith. So, faith is the only way to differentiate between people, and since faith is in the heart, no one can tell except God, this leads to the conclusion that God is the only one permitted to consider this person is better than the other.

Have we really evolved from apes to thinking intellectual human beings; only to classify the world on the basis of colour? While it is true that some words like "black" have long carried negative connotations, can a colour or a word really be good or bad? Instead of dwelling on the past, why don't we create a society in which these words have positive connotations instead? Where black, white, yellow, brown and red are just colours, beautiful vibrant colours. Not synonyms for racism.

[b][i]Black or white or blue.
Why should colour matter.
I come from a society which was under racial oppression for decades & in my view we're still there.
Racism is "taking us nowhere slowly".
We need to respect each other & treat each other equally & even look beyond the colour of one's skin but not ignorent about it either.

Why is it that some people think that because a person looks maybe a little different from themselves..it gives them cause to treat them different, to shun them..to disregard their views..and to alienate them..! We should accept everyone..have respect for eachother and then maybe..just maybe the world would be a much happier place to live in..sad

One time, I experienced someone making racist comments at me but then I realized that it was to defend themselves because they thought I was going to be racist because I'm Caucasian. But I understood and didn't take it personally.
I know racism still exists but it doesn't exist within me and that stands for something.

Why is it that some people think that because a person looks maybe a little different from themselves..it gives them cause to treat them different, to shun them..to disregard their views..and to alienate them..! We should accept everyone. The problem is that humans like to group together with other humans they have something in common with. This is an integral part of how we identify ourselves.

I'm not suggesting that different kinds of people never mix with each other; of course they do. But we continue to identify ourselves based on religion, nation, color and other terms used to make us "different than everyone else". As long as this happens, there will be people who lump everyone into those categories, and refer to them in negative ways.

The short answer: the problem will go away when we stop using those categories in positive ways as well. For example, as long as I view myself as an educated white american man, there will be people who will hate educated white american men.

i was watching a show that something like 80 or 90% of "whites" are descended from Aficans. how can people claim racial superiority when they are made up of all kind of different races in the end? also, from my understanding, Jesus was probably Arab. so much for the white supremists who call themselves christians. angry

I think subtle racism exists in all communities, all around the world. I can see it here in daily life where people with fairer skin are considered more beautiful or important than many other people who are dark skinned. And funny thing is, its like the shades of darkeness that people compare themselves to. It is disturbing. Its everywhere. I've come across it everywhere, among South asians,Arabas and South east Asians.

Most people like to identify with people with whom they have things in common with. Unfortunately, most people are so shallow they base everything on color. Color doesnt mean a thing. Its what is on the inside that matters.
Racism still does exist among people who refuse to move on. However, we all have a part to play by looking beyond color when it comes to people. Lets identify with other people. Society can only become integrated when we do that.

Well spoken. I have observed that people sometimes succumb to these attitudes when they are in competition for something, and as such could tend to take cheap shot at the other person to gain the upper hand. The more aware people become, the less they would succumb to these traits

well i know what u mean

i grew up in a small village in a small valley. there aren't such a lot of foreigners, people with "other" skin colours, ecc. so for most of the people "they" aren't a part of their daily life. the people are just by themselves, don't meet other people ...

i hope i could explain myself´. i don't want to protect them, because everyone has his own brain, which works, and everyone can inform himself by magazines, tv, radio, ecc. -- so everyone can decide to be a global citizen, or just to live in his own world.

that's a big problem in our vally, that most of the people aren't interested in beeing a global citizen, because THEIR WORLD ends at the end of the valley.

the story i wanted to tell is the following one:

about a year ago, i've been to a street festival with a friend. we met a friend of her, we talked for a while and than the guy asked me, what i'll study. I told him about my plans to stuy international cooperation and developement policy
he just smiled, and said:
ah so u are going to africa to teach monk(eys)--eh negros..

in the first moment i was like - he didn't really say that!?!? - did he??
realising it, i poured my drink on him, and went away....

i can't really descripe what i felt in this moment, but just the fact that i poured my drink on him, says a lot. because i am totally against such a things/actions. but in this case i acted before i thougt about it.

i was just shocked about his answer. don't understanding what he means, how he can say such a thing -- what i'll never do--

however in this moment i sadly realised that racism still exists

i dont actually think that we should wave that people are being racists in front of their faces because although that may make a difference the automatic reaction would be to defend themselves. i know that i call people white black yellow and so forth but i dont mean it in a negative way and people sense that. i think that people have to be told, guided and just notified. because once we try to take action how do we know that they wont call them black "dogs" or some other disgusting stuff at home to their children?stunned
