When did you become politically aware/active?
April 8, 2007 - 02:24 PM

I'm just wondering when people began to be aware of politics and activisim in their own lives. Was it something you came to late, on your own, or something that you grew up with? Was there a certain event that made you more aware of the world around you? Please share, as I am very interested to hear these stories.

i believe surroundings and social events makes a person aware of what is happening around him, and sometimes makes him decide to take a step for a cause. whether politics or any thing else.

i was young, when USSR was in afghanistan, every day saw bombardment, killings, good and bad news so i got some sort of involvment in all these stuff.

I guess it's something I grew up with... when i was a kid, i could look out of my balcony and see tourists visiting the temples in front of my house... Steadily with years no, of tourists declined, then the newspapers started writing more about ppl getting killed in remote villages... then slowly, they started reporting that more people were dying and in places that were more closer than the earlier remote villages...
then we had concurrent strikes... Sometimes our schools were closed because there were strikes, travelling became difficult,so we all realized we were in civil war and something was not right...
So, in search of this something that was not right, i guess steadily the political consiousness grew...

I would say that I started to get involved in things shortly after I started to work on an organic farm. While I took this job because I just needed a job it basically is what started the ball to roll. I had worked there for 5 years and had gained more than I could have attending university. Having that starting point from a farm has allowed me to become involved in Food Security and also given me the chance to do some short term work at a fair trade coffee collective and also visit some fair trade cacao (chocolate) collectives. I also have done some Food Security work on a farm in the Dominican Republic planting coffee bushes, yucca, banana and other various tropical plants.

While this might not look like a political issue, I think that food security is one of the largest social problems that can be solved through the political process if the producers and the consumers work towards the one goal of providing healthy local food for everyone.

I guess the sickening tribalic political wrangling amongst leaders was the beginning of an awareness in politics and the need for change and proper governance based on good leadership and not ethnic affiliation.

Was there anything specific about his administration that prompted you to action?
