Is it righ for political parties to create coalitions for the sole purpose of changing the leadership of the country with selfish motives for a grip on power rather than provision of good governance?
Have the sole purpose of political coalitions been misused?
yes

I am a Kenyan citizen and I've seen the national pride of my country raped by politicians in the name of forming coalitions to gain power. Leadership is not about who is in power. It's about who is doing the most good to benefit the most people. Politicians must have a heart for the people rather than a heart for their pockets and egos.
Zeroing in on the Kenyan situation, we need a new breed of leaders. We need a sharp brand of leaders that have no desire for personal gain but a passion to serve the country. We are lucky that we have been a very stable country. We now need leadership that will make us a newly developing country.

Political coalitions do put people in power but brings in mistrust and reigning of rebel members becomes an uphill task.
I fail to understand why politicians don't take the people's issues into account when they are elected into office.

I Indian politics its the era of coalition politics, where in many aprties coem togther to form a govt at the centre.tehre are two main parties congress and BJP.There are many smaller(regional or small national parties with few seats) that soemtimes ally with congress and soemtimes with Bjp.whosoever garners the requistie no of seats for majority forms the govt.small parties change coalition depending on their interests. The politics of thoughts or principles(ideology) is done by only congress and bjp.rest just follow their vested interests (of power).many a times political scinetists have suggested that congress and bjp must come togther and push all small partie sin opposition.this will clean up Indian political system of its ills.

It is pity that this is higly reccuring phenomena. It serves to only the politicians. It disregards the interest and the purposes of a political process to the people. a long the way it destroys and demeans the importance of democracy. It encourages hypocrasy in the leadership ranks and destroys whatever chance the country had to make of an independent and the best choice of leaders.
The only difference to one party state is the assumption that there exist multipartism and democracy.

I believe at the end of the day political coalitions have provided politicians a means/ticket to get to power without working a sweat and making of decisions be it passing of bills or otherwise easy. Voters have to strategize and work on their voting patterns, its the only way out.

It is obvious that political coalitions are formed to come to and stay in power .
But many a time they do good by attending to local and specific issues that are ignored by larger parties.
The disadvantage is that smaller and local parties lack national and integral outlook and become parochial . They must learn to cooperate and see the national interests.

Politics isnt my area but i have always thought this.
You are from Kenya and you understand thios is the second time we have heard of party coalitions. Evaluating from the NARC Coalition, it won the Kibaki government power but is also distabilized its operations. Within the coalition there are agrrements that they make in their closed doors. You can remember the story of MOU which the public we are not aware. So when they come to sell their coalition, there are many hidden issues which may contradict in their implemtntation the public interest.
Secondly, those who end making a coalition are those whose political carrer is threatened from the past evaluations. When we reject them in as a single part, they come together with those whose political records are favourable to the public and they end up in power. WE are being played here and as Kenyans we need a wake up call.
In my opimion, it is not good to have coalitions.

I find all this talk of how politicians should consider the "little people" very naive. The political system of most if not every country is designed so that political parties must have large campaign funds. This means that in order to win elections parties must get donations from the wealthy and are therefore bound to serve their interests. The interests of the working classes are only a consideration when it comes to getting votes and then all you have to do is promise to do something, you don't actually have to do anything.
This system can only ever become one for all the people when all the people are able to participate on an equal basis in the decision making process.

Also to add - political coalitions of the types that are being discussed here tend to happen in countries where a parliamentary system is in use. In Canada, where it could be argued that the Conservatives and the Bloc Quebecois are in an informal coalition, the situation is such that any measure that needs to be passed has to be vetted by all the parties in power - else an election could be called.
So while the purpose of some coalitions is to get into power, the reality is the lawmaking becomes an exercise of compromise - which is really how all democracies should be run.
