Should the USA and Britain apologise for their role in the slave trade. Why have they refused to do so all this while if they truly regret what transpired as recorded in history.
I personally think they should.

If everyone apologised for past evolved wrong doings, we would all be doing it to everyone for the rest of our lives!
Should we ask the last standing Royalty, those decendance still alive today to apologise for part of our wrongly or terrible evolved pasts?
The dark age were ugly, just as industrialisation and the now, white (legal) grey and black market, Economic and Religious and Military Wars that the children are groomed into!
The Hoot with the past and present, the Future is much more important.
The past and present are catalysts for debate, the future is there but to plan!
Together as only one species we should be.
Gerald

And I third everything Gerald has said !
We should not be splitting hairs at this point in time about who did what to whom in the past. They've admitted it and now it's time for us to move on. We are where we are now and I don't know what good trying to extract apologies from anyone will do us, when we have mountains of much more pressing issues to deal with as a continent.

Instead of focusing on past events..we should all be looking to the future and how we can build a brighter one..Well that's my opinion anyway..

The results are interesting. They reveal the deep-sitted diversities within us.
Anyway, on a more serious note let me make some issues clear.
An Apology is a fundamental issue and necessity for even forgiveness. The slave masters, as argued by many should at least apologise for what they did to Africa. The current situation of underdevelopment is a reflection of the dire impact of slavery and colonialism on the sons and daughters of Africa.
What I think the two powers behind the slave trade fear is the burden of moral responsiblity that accompanies any kind of apology they may render.
Hon. Tony Blair described Africa as the "scar on the conscience of the world " yet his government has refused to make a simple apology for the slave trade. They say so many things but not apologise.
When African leaders travel around the world cup-in-hand ,begging and pleading for aid, they are simply doing the opposite of what they should really be focusing their energy on.However, I admit globalization and international dialogue is key to sustaining a very peaceful world order and any country ignores the world for its own doom.
Compensation to the countries of Africa is a seroius issue that cannot be left to pass without comments.
It may interest many to know that EVEN SLAVE MASTERS IN THE USA WERE COMPENSATED IN TERMS OF MONEY WHEN THE SLAVE TRADE WAS PROSCRIBED.THE RESAON?THEY LOST THEIR "PROPERTIES".
I am happy and excited that an open discourse and discussion on this very important subject matter in forcefully on course here.
Let me read your opinion and please remember to vote too.
Peace!

I just don't understand how exactly a an apology will help? I know that they should and it troubles me deeply that both my government and the british government has refused to. But how wil this help developing African nations? How will this help impoverished african-americans? Will this suddenely break down the walls of prejudice now that the governments have apoligized? What are your thoughts?

Remember long memories are what cause pain and turmoil in the world. We cannot live in the past. Societies are to caught up in what crimes that their great great great great great grandparents commented against each other. These biases are than passed down through generations and a pre existing hate flows through their blood. They never get the chance to understand the other. They see them through the biased eyes of their forefathers. This issue is what keeps societies apart. We must forget the grudges of the past and work together to make a more promising future.

An apology is not neccessary in the slightest. I find it interesting how Blacks in America today are still considered African-Americans, I thought America was supposed to be free of prejedice.
By calling someone African American is disgusting, they are Americans. You don't see whites being called European-americans. Their great grandfathers were from africa not the current day.
