Zimbabwe: What about Mugabe?
March 29, 2007 - 09:31 AM
|
|
A summit of 14 southern African countries is being held in Tanzania, with the crisis in Zimbabwe at the top of its agenda.
Diplomats say leaders will tell Robert Mugabe that he should not stand for re-election in Zimbabwe next year.
The summit brings together the 14-nation Southern African Development Community (SADC).
Talks are also expected to address recent violence in the capital of DR Congo, Kinshasa.
Zimbabwe's president will be told in very plain terms, diplomats say, that the region cannot afford to see the situation continue, let alone deteriorate into a civil war that could engulf its neighbours.
As Mr Mugabe arrived in Tanzania on Wednesday night, the US state department expressed concern about Mr Tsvangirai and urged the SADC summit to hold Mr Mugabe to account "for his misrule, not only over the last few weeks but over the last few years".
NOW: Will African Leaders make it up?
Is Mugabe an African HERO?

Will the meeting of southern Africa's leaders resolve the crisis in Zimbabwe? Will President Mugabe step down gracefully?

Robert Mugabe has completely destroyed Zimbabwe in the last 7 years with his racist, violent, economically-destructive and power-grabbing agenda.
The world has shown double-standards when dealing with this tyrant!

To some he maybe an african hero, what with chasing away the white community, which wasn't in order.I think there were better ways to do it.many zimbabweans were homeless while the white settlers owned large tracts of land.Maybe the constitution was the right way to go about it.All in all his people are suffering the consequences.Mugabe epitomises a ruler who won't let the west dictate to him how to run his home. Most certainly his people find him somewhat a hero. This said,Mugabe is one of the last of a dying breed of leaders who cling to power with no intention of ever leaving it.Zimbabweans need a break!!

Ajay - did you see today when Mugabe basically admitting to beating the opposition leader and then added - "he deserved it"
what a thug.
I don't know about the world having a double standard - the US doesn't they have completely isolated the regeime

It's good that America is shunning Mugabe's regime.
The problem is that the African Union completely stands by him..
He appeared to be a sane man right till the mid-1990s and Zimbabwe was a model African nation.
The state of the country is really sad.

Mugabe must be a hero to a large number of people in his country to have only one Tsvangirai vying against him. I think that the solutions to Zimbabwes woes is the unity of the Zimbabwean people themselves. The best outsiders can do is support them. I remember in Kenya, change only came when several opposition leaders formed a coalition party to beat the party that had reigned for more than 20 years. Before that those who thought they were brave enough to singlehandedly bring change were met with the same fate as Tsvangirai!
As to he third qn,for a person who is so unremorseful about even his most blatant crimes(because he feels they are justified), I find it hard to believe he will agree to do as he is told unless they find something to tell him that will make sense according to his manner of thinking!
