Unfortunately, there are many drug and alcohol-related problems in North America and this is not a problem specific to youth. Not all are affected and many make smarter decisions but due to peer pressure and natural curiousity many do turn to drugs and alcohol. In fact, I would go as far to say that many youths here regard trying drugs as a natural rite of passage. I feel that educators have a great role in trying to end this dependency on alcohol/drugs in society, but I think the media could play a more important part. Media in the UK has created some pretty powerful awareness on what drugs/alcohol can really do. The newspapers have shown photos of people in drug-related comas/in overdose situations, etc. I think these are pretty powerful images to see. Just some thoughts!
