Many organizations have adopted corporate social responsibility programs for the sake of portraying a 'caring' image when behind the scenes they are doing nothing at all to demonstrate that they care. There are only very few who actually do care and are really engaging in bettering their communities. The majority do it only because it is the 'in-thing' for organizations. Organizations need to go beyond image to substance. They need to provide tangible evidence that they are substantially improving their communities.

I think corporates has a long way to achieve the professionalism of Social work/development. there are many corporates who consider CSR as burden and not as an investment for their benifit and benefit of the society in which they are operating.
business houses although shifted their focus from shareholders benefits to stakeholders benefits, yet they lack perspectives .......

corporations have more rights and fewer responsibilities than humans under law
humans are punished more severly than corporations under the law
now corporations are permitted to live for ever, unlike the original corporate charters
but we are living under de facto fascism eg. corporatism so what can you expect
now the ultimate corporate efficency, totalitarianism, is on the horizon in the USA
this whole thread is somewhat niave in its assumptions
it seems to me that We the People need to reestablish the guidelines in the original contract (constitution) between We the People and government,
the original revolt in the NorthAm colonies was against the chartered corps running the colonies, are the reasons now any less than the reasons then?

When then citizens of our nations, the very lifeblood of the industries which they make money off, when they decide that these corporations have done enough damage then we can take action against the oppressors of the proletariat. Reforms such as these start the process which will eventually lead to corporate social responsibility, but as of yet they are not strong enough to create true change. Corporations are allowed to run rampant over the indigent and those in dire need of assistance. We as free-thinking and well supported people must band together to demand justice from these abusers of the immense power of the multi-national corporation.

I think is has an impact to the society in general.
Most communities in Kenya have benefited from CSR. A good example is what the Safaricom and East Africa Breweries Ltd is doing for CSR!They drill boreholes and set up schools for the communities. EABL has allocated a part of its resources to Educate bright students hence gives scholarship. I think its a good move by the companies and organization to do that!
I think most organization should do the same by allocating their time and resources to CSR to better the communities that are not able to get out of poverty. If more allocation of resources could be done then we will not live on getting loans from IMF and the WORLD Bank but develop our own self!
For those who are undertaking CSR kudos and keep up!*

CSR programs have evolved over the years in all countries. They have shifted from employee welfare and labor development to participating in acutal comminity initiatives and supporting non-profit organizations.
I think it would be unfair to brand all corpoaret efforts towards social development and participation as mere image building and goodwill excercise. While many corporations may undertake such work for visibility and greater leverage in local markets, many companies are also undertaking such programs with a view to contribute towards the society and reduce inequity. It makes greater sense to promote and encourage such efforts than be skeptical and stifle them. Corporations also need guidance and information to make sound social responsibility initiatives and participate in the real sense and not just in a peripheral and superficial manner. Its a joint effort between government, companies, ngos and the civic society, each having its role and responsibility.

You might find this interesting:
A new report on corporate sustainability says that in the United States, half of the top 100 companies now issue reports that include their economic, environmental, and social impacts, and by next year it should be a clear majority of companies looking at corporate responsibility in a different way.
Early reports seemed primarily self-serving, but with new standards for reporting, we're starting to see more responsible efforts and shifts in corporate culture.

Hi,
I may be late joining in on this discussion, but I thought I could still make a little contribution to share my views on the issue of corporate social responsiblity of businesses.
First, I laud the efforts being administered by companies worldwide. However, being a marketing practioner I must say that the efforts are not in most cases genuine, but a mere company strategy to increase their brand awareness, knowledge, image which should in turn contribute to the increase in market share for comapny. The final action is this chain is increased profits which makes the managers get more pay and bonuses and company shareholders invest more in the company.
Some of us may argue that there is nothing wrong if companies are going to exploit persons who may be marginalised by certain conditions and in the same time benefit themselves. But let us look at the ethics involved in truly diagnosing the situation.
Companies have the resources. Yes. But let us rid ourselves of achieving results through others rather than working for it. Companies being involved in community development is not something that can be stopped or should even being thought about putting an end to. But let us address the way in which we exploit these less fortunate persons.
