[Poll] Should Canadians Sel Water
April 5, 2003 - 12:16 PM

I think Canadians should export their water to other countries who need fresh water because Canada tends to waste water and a lot of countries need water.

If the water is not going to be used might as well just share it

I think Canada should sell their water because of the large amounts we have.Canada is one of the countries with the largest amounts of fresh water.Canadians don't use a lot the water from the Great lakes.Even if all of Canada's citizens use water, there would still be huge amounts of water left.

Why not sell this water and make profit from it instead of keeping all of it for ourselves. This way the money made off of the water could be used for Canada's society needs.
For example, most skools now don't have enough money for special extra cirricular activities which could happen with the help of this money.

The selling of Canada's water could also make a better relationship with other countries. Which could help Canada if there were special requests.

conserving & selling Canada's water
April 6, 2003 - 10:13 AM

Canada is a water-rich nation trailing Brazil,Russia & China. The water cycle and evaporation is what's keeping the amount of water the same for the past 4 billion years.20% of the world is fresh water and 9% of the water is renewable.water will be "oil of the 21st century" or "liquid gold".It will eventually cause wars between nations if it runs out.The water that we have is used for drinking(20% of fresh water),sanitation, and transporting supplies to other places. Some of the water is renewable because of evaporation and rain. Also the waste water goes back into the oceans.
Canada should sell their water because Canadians waste a lot of water. For example, some people waste water washing their cars even when it's not necessary, little kids play with water guns and the water in a swimming pool needs to be switched often.Canadian water usage is faster than other countries. Other countries may not have enough water so they use it wisely. Liquid gold means that water will be fought over by countries because they may not have enough. Also because we are wasting water, the water value will rise.Canada should definitely sell their water because we have enough. On the other hand, other countries don't have enough. Some people are even dying from thirst. The only reason why Candais not selling their water because they think that we may run out in the future.Well, other countries are already running out.So if that's the reason then,we might as well sell water to other countries that are struggling.Egypt,India,Pakistan may need to purchase our water because they are dry areas that don't have much. They may also be struggling because they have a high population so therefore the water is used up very quickly. The profits for selling Canada's water are that we will be paid for the water and that we will be saving people's lives.Water can be used wisely by not washing your car when it is unecessary, turn off the tap when not in use and also don't pollute the water,so we will have more fresh water for everyone!

as i mentioned in prrevious conversations, selling canada's water would be a useful source of money that would would receive. by selling our water to foreign countries, canada could use this opportunity to produce more income for the country. in some situations, in particular, some countries desperately need the water to keep individuals surviving. if we tend to sell the water to countries, canada, then would therefore have a good reputation of being concluded as helpful in a certain view.

nevertheless, if we do not obtain any money from the countries that are purchasing our fresh water, then the coutry could also trade in other natural resources that would be a good profit to our country. canada could see the water for a trade of other more required and more needed resources that our country is hoping in needed for. canada may have a large amount of water system, but however we might not have much of other natural resources, so therefore selling what we have more, and trading in for what we have less is something worth accomplishing. in my personal point of view, i conclude that canada should indeed sell its water to other countries.

I do not agree, Sandra77, that selling our water will diminish Canadian's rate of consumption. I don't think that people will be able to adjust to the idea that less water is available which means that it is likely they will continue consuming water in the same voracious manner. Though eventually, when water has become as valuable a commodity as you say, I'm sure people will value it more, I don't think that this change in perception will come soon enough. If Canada suddenly begins exporting water, people will not adjust their habits fast enough to make up for the lower level of the "liquid gold." We are so used to wasting water that only a dangerous shortage would be enough to break our habit quick enough to use water as a commodity in the near future. Also, it is always being skirted around that countries truly in need of this water would probably not be on the receiving end. It is more than likely that in order to make a profitable deal, it would have to be sold somewhere like the US. I would love it if something could be worked out to help extremely poor and thirsty countries (and the natural resources exchange is an interesting proposal), but I don't see it as a realistic reason to support selling Canada's water.
