[b]As the MDGs are goals for sustainable development, they are, in and of themselves, tools for fulfilling the responsibility to ensure that all people's human rights, including the right to development, are met. Among a person's rights enumerated in Article 25 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights are;
(1)The right to a standard of living adequate for the health and the well being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing, medical care and necessary social services and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control and
(2)Motherhood and childhood are entitled to special care and assistance. The broad scope of these rights is mirrored in the scope of the MDGs. The MDGs offer one of the most important opportunities ever to achieve sustainable development with a focused eye on the processes by which it is achieved. Properly carried out, the processes themselves will build an environment conducive to the attainment of all rights by all the people since human rights and sustainable human development are interdependent and mutually reinforcing.
