Can We Help Save Our Water (continued)
April 4, 2003 - 04:41 AM

I feel lucky to be part of the Great Lake drianage because we have so much fresh water around as so I don't have to worry about not having enough water to use (as for now), but if we keep on managing our water system the way we are doing then one day we would be worrying about if there are enough water because we used it all up. We youth could help solved this problem by doing little thing like not waste water ourselves and encourage others to save water. Or we could do something provincial like starting up a project or sending a crue of people to some of the lake shores to clean up some of the pollutions. Whatever we do the main point is well being, just by having the attitude to help save our Great Lakes we are helping a little by little.

Yes, pollution in the Great Lakes is a problem. We get water form the lakes. If the lakes are polluted then there would be bacteria and other germs in the water, making it not drinkable.

Many people take water for granted, like *air*, but it is truly a gift. Without water, nothing can survive. The world would simply be a barren waste land, the beauty of it destroyed. That must not happen! Unfortunately, people are very careless about their very valuable resource of water; dumping chemicals, trash, and pollutive garbage into the lakes. Must we end up like Walkerton? Must we spend extra money to buy such a common resource? When three quarters of the Earth is made up of water? Of course, only around 3% of the three quarters is fressh water, with 2% frozen in the polar ice caps. So really, 1% of the Earth is freshwater - we must not waste that 1%! It is extremely valuable! Even so, that 1% is already a lot! We must not need to pay for such a resource like water!

We need to conserve our water source, not waste it or pollute it. It is important to keep it a free resource, because we need it for many purposes; washing, drinking, and created electricity. We must not deprive animals of homes, or kill them, or even harm ourselves, and conserve water, not abuse it! Respect the natural resources that nature provides us, because nothing is unlimited.

I totally agree! When people think of water pollution, they usually think of sewage disposal, industrial effluents, and sometimes even agricultural sources. Although, a great deal of the contamination of our surface and groundwater resources occurs closer to home. Our lifestyles may be able to contribute to pollutions of our water resources. For example we can reduce automobile use by carpooling, biking, walking, or riding the bus, because when it rains, air pollution turns into storm water pollution. We should never wash paints or equipment into the street. Also, when rain is forecast, we should never apply lawn or garden chemicals.
Here are some examples we can conserve water. Repair leaks promptly. A small faucet leak wastes 4,000 gallons of water per year. A toilet leak wastes thousands of gallons per month. Take shorter showers and turn off the water while brushing teeth.
Chemicals that are washed down the sewer may not be removed by the systems. Aquatic life can be damaged or water supplies contaminated. So this is why we should be more careful. The threat of water pollution really exists, so we shouldn’t take clean water for granted.

Yes, I do think this is a problem because if we don't take care of our water what other source do we use to drink, our for electricity? We also kill animals. We may also kill ourselves, by polluting it and then drinking it. Like the city that got bad water, and people died from it, that's what may happen to us. There are ways we can prevent it. As long as we make sure that we don't pollute it then we can save our lives, and the lives of animals.

Yes this is a problem! You're polluting our water, the water we drink and wash with. The more we pollute the more we have to pay for bottled water which cost approximately 1.50 for one. Wouldn't you rather have it for free? If you keep our Great Lakes clean by not polluting it,you could save money and time. Polluting the water will also cause the animals in the lakes to die. Not only the animals may die , you may too. If we don't have clean water and it is polluted, if by chance someone drinks it, they will die. If the whole area is polluted will dirty water they will have to suffer. Like an inncident that happened called Walkerton. The water was polluted, people couldn't drink from their taps anymore because they were afraid to die. If we stop polluting the Great Lakes we would have a better world of clean air and clean water.

I think the pollution in the Great Lakes is a problem. Ontario uses the lakes for a lot of reasons. People use the water to drink from, wash, and to power our electricity. If the Great Lakes become too polluted with chemicals, we won't be able to drink from the taps. Afraid that we might get poisoned, like the people of Walkerton. We shouldn't be paying to buy bottled water when water can be free, because the world is practically made of water. We can help find solutions to the pollution problem in the Great Lakes. People can conserve water. The workers from nuclear factories should dispose of their chemicals in special areas so it won't infect the environment. People who go to beaches and have waste should throw them in the garbage cans provided, instead of leaving them on the ground. The garbage left on the beach grounds can be swept into the lakes by the ocean's currents. If these things are followed, then we might be able to reduce the pollution in our Great Lakes. If the fresh water did run out someday, we will regret not taking care of our water supply more carefully. We should start now and be more careful of where we dispose of our garbage, and how much water we use so we don't waste it.

it is wrong...
April 4, 2003 - 11:47 AM

yea it is a ploblem. They need to keep it clean and they need to send fresh water. The animals there are rare or almost extinct. We need clean waterfor the animals. We need to do more than use water for electricity. If you like animals, just think of the animals..... That is why i think it is a ploblem.

YES!!!
April 4, 2003 - 11:49 AM

heyhey! This is a problem! Altho we live so close to the lakes- we still have to buy water. This is becuz the water is so polluted! If it wasn't populated, water wouldn't cost like $5.00 for water, when it culd be free if we conserved it. have you ever left thelights on when u aren't in te room? I have- tons of thimes-well guess what? We're wasting water!altho it seems like we aren't we really are. this is becuz we're using water for electricity!so turn off the lights! Another way to waste water is to keep taps running!which i often do as well and i'm sure a lot of us are guilty of this "crime" of wasting water! Polluting the water also causes problems for the enviroment. When we pollute, we might also be killing animals and we might be taking animals away from thier homes becuz they can't live there. Is that really fair? To get rid or garbage, we kill tons of rare speices and plants as well.Soon we will run out of water becuz we're wasting it. In a couple hundred years there won't be any water in the great lakes for our desendants... but at this rate- mayb just 100 years and it's all gone. Then we'll go to another fresh-water suply and use all that water so that there's no more water left for drinking in the whole entire world and pretty soon, the cost of water will go even higher to like $10.00 per bottle. If ontario didn't waste as much water, there would be more water left over. another problem is how do we divide the fresh water suply among Canada and U.S.A? Should we be selling it to oher countries? Altho it seems that we're making more money, doesn't it seem that the goevermet doesn't give n/e of it to us anyways? So what's the point? Do u even agree with it? Do u think that we should sell it? and becuz it's so polluted we don't feel safe to drink out of the taps. most ppl have like 3 filtering devices. One on their sink, a filter and then they boil it? Is that how much trouble it is to get 1 glass of water?that's y ppl just buy thie water. at a cheap price they can get clen filtered water taht they could normally just get out of the tap. Now that we have more ppl in the world (a higher population), shouldn't we all just conserve. If we all just save a glass of water per person by using less electricity or wasting then we could conserve a lot of water. We can all work together to slowly get rid of this problem!

is this a problem?
April 4, 2003 - 11:49 AM

I think people should try to conserve our water instead of just using it for things that we don't really need. They should use there water to drink and for tings that they need. They could conserve our water by not turning on the lights when there's no one at home, don't turn on the when it's a sunny day outside, let the tv rest after u watched it for a period of time, and take a shorter shower would help a lot.
Our water is already really polluted so why make it worse for ourselves? Canada is already a great place to live and people and it has 15% of the world fresh water in the world. Water is really important to us, we need it to to drink, to clean ourselves, water the plants so we can have food, and for other stuff that we need to survive. If we don't have water we wouldn't live as long.
Since we use water everyday and in a way we waste it we should save them so the people in Walkterton could finally drink from their taps again without worry about. We (people of the community) should try o help if we just work together and save our water supply.

I think that pollution is bad for the environment, especially to freshwater lakes that we drink from. We also use it in our daily lives, like showering yourself in it, and washing your dishes and hands.Water is very important to us, and we should tke care of it as much as possible, because we don't want to end up like the city of Walkerton. Many people died because of the bad water supply.

We can make a Difference!
April 4, 2003 - 11:51 AM

Water is an extremely valuable resource. People who live in the Great Lakes Basin depend greatly on the surrounding lakes for water. We depend on that water source for a number of reasons, mainly for drinking. 20% of the world's freshwater source is located in the Great Lakes. Imagine how much it would affect us if that water source was polluted! The animals that live there will suffer, and the people who consume water from the lakes will suffer as well. Over 300 hundred toxic chemicals are found in the Great Lakes - over 300 toxic chemicals we can be consuming right now! We can reduce the chemicals that drain into the lakes - we can make a difference! Right now, we are not managing our fresh water resources very well. Throw less garbage into rivers, and all that can change!

.....to be continued.....
(I have more to post, but I don't have enough time - please be patient - there is more coming! I am not finished yet)

Fresh Water
April 4, 2003 - 11:51 AM

Fresh water is important to ontario. Ontario depends on the fresh water from the great lakes. We have to be very careful to where we put our pollution. In the great lakes there are rare animals and fresh water. If you pollute the great lakes we won't have enough water to drink. If that happens then we have to buy bottled water. There are water all over earth, why do u have to pay to get water? This doesn't make sense. No one wants to pay to get water when there is so much of it. That's why the great lakes are very important to Ontario, our province.
