SAVE OUR FUTURE - NIGERIA: UNHEALTHY ENVIRONMENT
March 8, 2007 - 01:39 PM

Some parts of Nigeria are constantly and continuously confronted with a myriad of health and environmental problems which are caused by poor sanitation.

The recent demolition in the Abuja the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria, by the Mallam Nasiru El-Rufai’s administration, which was intended to return Abuja to its original master plan, majority of those that had their houses demolished had no choice but to move satellite towns around Abuja, i.e. Suleja, Mararaba, Masaka, Madala, Zuba, Karu and Nyanya.

Most of these areas have been turned to slums by the increasing number of people who have no choice but to leave there. Poor sanitation has long become an issue in these areas. The absence of good bathroom facilities forces people to defecate around. Even though people know it is an offence, they go around dumping human waste and all types of wastes around their environment, thereby increasing their health risk and defacing the environment they live in.

Some of the towns such as Mararaba, Masaka, Madala and Suleja are towns in neighbouring states such as Niger State and Nasarrawa State. Most of the people that live there work in Abuja and have to travel all the way to Abuja on daily basis to get to work or school.

I have had the opportunity of going to so many states in Nigeria, most of these states are not left out i.e. Lagos, Ibadan and Kano.

Why can't these big cities take a cue from other big towns like Bauchi, Jos, Jigawa, Calabar etc.

Hmmm,

Your comments about el-rufai and his reform process in abuja caught my attention.

I think that if you compare the abuja city to what it used to be 4 years ago, you will agree with me that we have seen remarkable difference.

Things can work very well in Nigeria if we can all learn to do things the right way.

If all other cities can learn to plan like Abuja, then we will be able to reduce the problems you talked about.

I was in abuja 3/4 days ago and i was very happy to notice that the country's captal is working, comparable t its peers worldwide. We need people who can adhere to the standards like el-rufai in other states so that Nigeria can move forward faster.angelic

Your comments on El-Rufcai and his DEMOLITION FAIR in Abuja is worthy of comment. I for one completely agree with the last speaker totally in this respect. While the "WAR" was on between some ill-fated Abuja residents and El Rufai, I must confess that the press, and many other Nigerians never gave Rufai a breathing space. He was called different names and branded so many naughty titles, but he kept on. As at today, it is little wonder that the man is celebrated every where, as testified to by the new look Abuja now wears.
These are classic examples of what we should do, individually and collectively, wherever we may find ourselves in Nigeria or elsewhere for that matter to make our environments as clean and healthy to inhabit as posible.
I however completely disagree with the notion that the displaced people of El Rufai demolition activity "have no choice but to live in the slums and ghettos of Abuja". This is untrue to the extent that those who were victims and are genuinely business minded have picked up from their ruins and have started pursuing other legal means of livelihoood either in Abuja or elsewhere and can conveniently be said to have recovered.

All have said very well in this important issue, i would also like to add here that the unhealth environment in Nigeria are general costed by the masses, it is a matter of I don't care attitude;after all where are those people seeing/eating the money hence they should do everything for us even clean our shoes and private toilets for us. While many don't even want to see Nigeria in good form as there will always room for corruption for them, quite unfortunate many folks preffer and see corruption and unhealthy environments as an advantage to eat belly full, I still remembering how Lagos state was in the eaily 80's, then imagine it's current situation. well I pray that Abuja don't return to the very same soon while I encourage individuals and states to immtate and implement more effective strategies to provide good living to my people of Nigeria.smile

Don't get me wrong.

Personally I appreciate what the FCT Minister is doing, Abuja is cool and we all know it.

I refer to Abuja as the the GRA of Nigeria.

It is difficult to get an unhealthy environment in Abuja. When you look at the satelite towns we feel sorry for those that live there.
I guess there is nothing bad in government extending their work to all those areas.

There should be some sort of plan for such areas that if carried out would help Nigeria as a whole.

Gradually other states will begin to emulate Abuja and other lovely cities.

But when we leave those people to live in such areas then am afraid we are subjecting our future to dirts.

In the squalor we have children with dreams, in that slum we have children with vision, in that dirty environment we have children who are the leaders of tomorrow.
