Environmental Priority-Clean Water

Environmental Priority-Clean Water
Canada holds 9% of the world’s renewable fresh water. It has the longest oceans coastline of any country, and second largest continental shelf along our coasts. However Canadians are the second highest user in day-day lives. The high per capita water usage, plus the stressors like population growth, introduces pressures on Canada’s fresh water resources. While we are enjoying our fresh water, pollution is a very important problem in some of the waters. In some areas there are people can’t swim or eat the food they catch in water.
There are three important water pollution problems: toxic substances, excess nutrients, and sedimentation. It has a wide impact in our health, environment and economy. Some toxic substances could cause cancer. The others are harmful to reproductive, immune system, and detected in the breast feed milk of mothers. All Canadians are affected by the pollution. Health risks to small children, elderly, and Aboriginal who lives in the north and depends on local wildlife as source of food. Beluga Whales in ST.Lawrence River have blood level of pesticides and PCBs 10 times higher than the once in North. It happen because of the toxic substances and acid rain are damaging our environment. Acid rain is threatening 15,000 lakes and forests in eastem Canada. The governments are involved in a wide rand o pollution, and all the water issues. Also the predicted impacts of climate change: flooding, droughts, bulk water removals, and inter basin water diversions. Population growth also accelerated pressures on water supplies. Plus the nature water and wetland systems which our freshwater supplies.

Environmental Priority-Clean Water

The world is full of water. 70% of the world is water. But you can only drink 2.5% of that water. 95% of the water in the earth is nondrinkable. Not only humans drink water, other living things in the world drink water to. So there is not exactly enough water to feed the whole world. We Canadians uses about 20-40 litres of water per day. We are second highest of water using today in the world. But we have the most fresh water in the world too. We get all the water from lakes, and rivers. But only 9% of that water is renewable.

Pollution is a big problem occuring now. When the water is polluted, we can not drink, or swim in the water. Our water get polluted by toxic substances and acid rain. If we drink that water it will be bad for our health. Animals get harmed too. For example, whales are getting higher blood levels. We not only drink our water we eat the living creatures in the lakes and rivers too, if those animals get diseases we might as weel get them when we eat them. Also we need the water to water our plants. If the water is polluted and we water it to our plants we dont get to eat the food because its been polluted. If our water is polluted our cycle of food will be ruined. So try to keep our water safe.

I think Canadians take water for granite m and waste a lot of it not knowing it is a resource that is soon going to deplete. Many of our waters are being polluted with toxins, excess nutrients, and sedimentation. To clean polluted waters is very costly. The toxic substances from water pollution hav e been dtected in the breast milk of mothers, so it may affect the new born babies who drink the milk. This issue can affect our health aswell. Some toxic substances in our water are know to cause cancer. The government should also put more pressure on industries who dump their pollutants in the water to get rid of them. This could affect the underwater ecosystem and destroy the plants and animals who habitat underwater. As humans, we eat seafood and this resource may not be available to us to nurish because of the underwater pollution. Many people assume that we will be provided with an endless supply of fresh water. Unfortunately, Canadians are the second -highest users of water in their day-to-day lives, thus our waters are being polluted so we won't be able to value this resource for long. As Canadians we must consider not to pollute our land and water, and keep in mind that fresh water will soon be depleted if we keep wasting it.

Canada is known throughout the world for its' bountiful supply of water. We are the attendant of 9% of the world's renewable fresh water. In the world, 97.5% of of the water is fresh water, 3/4 of the remaining 2.5% is closed in polar ice caps. There is a limited amount of water supply left over, and people are polluting it.

Canada's fresh water, is being polluted by three main problems, toxic substances, excess nutrients, and sedimintaion. Polluting the water, greatly effects us humans. It has a wide range of destruction to our health, environment and the economy. Certain toxic substacnes in our polluting water, are known to cause cancer. Other wastes can lead to damages to the immune, and reproductive systems, and the breast milk of mothers. The pollution of water targets mainly the elders, small children, and the Aboriginals who rely on wildlife as food.

Toxic substances and acid rain are destroying our environment. Besides humans being affected by the water pollution, marine animals such as the beluga whales are effected by this problem as well. The beluga whales living in the St. Lawrence River, have blood levels contaminated with pesticides and PCB's. These whales are more at risk than the beluga whales living up north.

Canadians should reconcider that polluting the water would lead to several damages. So keep our water safe, because you never know when it would all be gone.

Karmen, I think what you wrote is so true. We should try to save most of our water. Since we have so little water and so many people.

I agree with Karmen. Canada has a lot of water, but we (canadians) use our water like we have an endless supply of clean, drinkable water. We should use less water and not take advantage of it, we should cherish it instead.
