Reparations???? Not necessary.
March 6, 2007 - 02:00 PM

Just going to state an opinion. Why do some African Americans still believe that we, America, owe them reparations for what happened 150 years ago? Because they want the government to pay for everything that they can't pay for. Now the African leaders benefited from selling America slaves, making a good amount of money. Now why aren't the African Americans that are complaining about reparations looking at their own ancestors who sold their people over to the Americans. They are as much to blame as the people who enslaved them. I am totally against slavery and I know that it was a bad thing that happened to this country, but 150 years down the road America should not have to give reparations to those ancestors who were inflicted. Also, there were actually a lot less enslaved people than one would think. Only the rich could afford it, but those that could enslaved more than just 1, which is where the big numbers come from. Back to the government paying for everything....All races have an equal chance in this country to excel. The past has nothing to do with what you can do in the future. There tons of opportunities for all races. Therefore the government should not have to pay welfare to those that had 4 kids instead of sticking with there schooling and getting a degree to make money. Just my opinion.

The only thing i agree with is that reparations should not be given; but although all of us have opportunity, some have to try harder than others to step up in life, because of outside obstacles such as stereotypes, or fear of difference, or more personal ones such as a history of poverty. Also, welfare and reparations are not the same thing, and black people are not the only ones who use it; just like there are projects, America does have trailor parks. Both of these being classic stereotypes of poor blacks and whites. Also you must remember that some people dont have the opportunity to control their given situation; take for example a 13 yr. old girl who gets raped and whos whole life is forever changed because she has a baby. Whether or not we see it there is still much racism in America, which will not be done away with until people take the step to find out more about each other from a personal point of view. There will continue to be ignorance and prejudice in America until people on [b]BOTH sides of the eqaution go out of their way to accept differences and understand them...

I totally agree that welfare and reparations are not the same. I still think that the government should still supply welfare. I also agree with your point that not everyone has the choice as to how they live their live sometimes such as the girl that gets raped and is stuck with a child for the rest of their life, which screws up whatever plans they had in life. What I don't think is right is that some people (whites, blacks, hispanics, all races) who have a great situation to start out with turn their life into a bad situation and expect the government to provide them with money. They just have to make the right decisions in life and choose the right things. I know this has turned from reparations talk into a welfare talk. I just think that circumstances should be measured when dispersing the welfare. Because there are those people that live in trailor homes and work their butt off for minimum wage and can't even support maybe one kid, those people should recieve it, but not those that keep on having kids and expect money to keep rolling to from the government to pay for those kids, when they had a decision to make.

I think it is right to say that the circumstances or vulnerabilites need to be kept in mind before deciding what kind of support to be given to an individual or to a family.
However, I think the difficulty lies in "qyantifying" the vulnerabilities. It has been such a complex thing, especially in the developing world. Vulnerabilites can range from -belonging to lower social strata to having disability to being a woman to being a child without parents.
So, how does one decide what support needs to be given to a family where there are many children? Yes, the parents probably had choice and information to have few children , instead of many. But whats the fault of teh child in this? Will stopping the support to family imapct this child? How do we manage that impact so that rights of the child are not violated?
Everyday, Govt. and voluntary sector faces these questions and work towards solutions. Probably there is no one right solution. And probably there are many soultions which need to be tried.
Yes, Govt. may at times decide on the basis of "vote bank". But is that reson enough to disgree with the measures that might reduce vulnerabilites in the long run?

It might have passed already 150 years, but it doesn't mean that the damage caused by a government to a group of people has been repaired. This is the beginning, in my opinion, of conflict in the society. A group of people understand that their rights have been vulnerated and they of course seek for some kind of reparation. And forgetting the obligation of giving proper reparation to people who deserve it only makes this people angry at everyone else. I cannot talk about welfare in the US, since I don´t live there, but I am completely convinced of the need o recognizing the damage caused to another one and repairing this damage.
It is also true, and I don't think this can't be denied, in the US there is still a lot of racism, and even though it is true that anyone that wants to progress will do it, with or without the government's help. But still afroamerican groups, latinamerican groups, adn other ethnic groups do not receive the same opportunities as US citizens, even though most of this people do work and receive some government's help, but they do not receive it for free, they have to work daily and give the government its part in taxes and all this kind of payments.
Afroamerican people are still claiming for what they suffered a long time ago, and this has not been correctly recognized by the people. They are claiming what was taken away from them. They are claiming for the death of millions of their people that were treated like animals, were murdered, and sold as merchandise. And taking away the little government's help they receive is not the solution, it will only make more deep the differences between the people. Want to change their behaviour? Give them the same opportunities, education as the rest of the citizens. Let them see that you understand what they feel and that there's another way.

it is very foolish to think that the past is erased.

I completely agree with Africhika, the past will always affect the future until the damage caused in this past is properly recongnised. I also believe that white people are very quick to answer that, since they were never exposed to be slaves. Thanks for answering in this threat, Africhika, it is always very important to see the other point of view.

I think the point is not for the black communities to know who they are. I think nobody is more aware of that than themselves. And also, even if they do "know who they are", it is no use because that's the whole point of racism, not understanding who the rest of the people are, just labeling as "negro", "latino", etc. What is it worthed to know that I am a African american, if the people who discriminate me couldn't tell the difference? I always refer my commentaries to South America, because that's what directly touches me, and it is so common to find out people who cannot tell the difference between a person from Colombia, from El Salvador or from Mexico. From Rio Grande, all the way down we're all mexicans. And of course, a lot of people in South America must pay for crimes against humanity, that is true, but the problem is that it doesn't matter how much people pay for crimes committed in America (and with America I mean South, Central and North America), the problem is that the real instigators of the crimes will never pay. Haven't seen one case in which the CIA has payed for the murder of thousands of persons during the Pinochet dictatorship, even when it is well known that without their "good efforts" Pinochet would have never became dictator in the first place.
Haven't seen any of the directors of Chiquita Brands pay for the murder of 2000 people in Colombia in 1928, they just have to pay 25 million dollars because of that. So it seems to be enough to buy 2000 lives.
But, of course, let's never forget that we, people discriminated and mistreated "do not know who we are". Let's never forget that we are the ones who do not see what makes us different from each other, that we can't tell the difference and that we are just "that forgotten continent of Africa" or "those Banana Republics".

What Shall We Call Him?
March 26, 2007 - 07:28 PM
|
|
YESSSSS.................
So often the various journalists find trouble in selecting the proper name for the (Moor), Moorish American. Some say “Negro, another will brand him so-called Black, Negro, Colored “Race Man”, still another will call him “Afro-American”, “Coon”, “Shine”, “The Brethren”, Boy and your “Folks”.
It is indeed a hard matter to find something suitable for the various occasions where a title needs to be used. Is it that these people have a National name when first brought to these shores in the early part of the Seventeenth Century? If so, what was it? Did not the Land from which they were forced have a name? It now appears a good idea for those whose duty it is to write for the various journals to find out what the National name of the fore-fathers of these primary demean other people by America was.
Also look into history of the founders of civilization and see who they were and where they stood in the building of the present civilization. Probably a few hours in an up-to-date library would serve to relieve the strain on our men and women of letters, when the occasion presents itself for a title for these people.
The matter of the various names given to these twenty-two million so-called people in the United States of America with all hues of every race of the globe was an act of Anglo Saxon psychology. They gave him a name, then defined it as something inferior to theirs. “White”, they defined as a color of purity; “Black”, they say, represents everything evil. The so-called “Negro”, as they were called in this nation, have no nation they published to which they might look with pride.
Their history starts with the close of the civil war according to America or more properly with Moors being forced to serve some one else. Thus he was separated from the illustrious rich history of his forefathers (Royal Moors) conquerors of Spain in the 8th century who were the founders of the first civilization of the Old World.
This matter should be looked into with a hope of correcting it because of our long and tragic history of expulsions, forced conversions, denial of treaty protections, limitations of civil and political rights, lies and slanders and mass murders.

Reparations: Still necessary

I am very sorry with UFJ because, first of all I replied late and second, I have to correct him.
I thought something was wrong with the term "moor" applied to members of the black communities that were brought to America (including South and North, since slavery was seen as often here as it was in the USA) are not descendants of the moors. They are very different groups and belong to different cultures. Moors were a community of northern Africa, yes, but their origin and their cultural and religious practices were islamic.
On the other hand, the black people brought to America came from other countries of the central and the southern areas of Africa, where the british, portuguese and spanish colonies were located and not from the north, even though Spain has always have a close relation with the northern african countries, relations that have also included colonialism but later in history.
One must be very careful with the terms used to designate ethnic groups. I am not sure about how "moor" sounds in english, but being in Spain has taught me that calling someone a "moor" is disrespectul and has some discrimination behind it. Rememeber that language is a powerful that can be easily misused, as I believe this is the case. Maybe there´s another way to refer to people without refering to their ethnic (or racial, don´t like the term) origins.

there are hundreds and hundreds of ethnic groups in africa. Moors is just ONE of the many.
also, it doesn't matter what history chooses to call a group of people. william shakespeare asks, "what's in a name? that which we call a rose by an any other name would still smell as sweet."
what matters most is the heart of the culture. so it doesn't matter what folks choose to call blacks because blacks still have a unique culture.

It is offensive to call any race of people a name other than their own.
Moors in American have been denied years of standing and connection with their families in Africa. Yes, a rose is still a rose but so is a Moor.
Our coalition along with others in DC have fought in the Courts of America and filed petitions in the International Courts of Justice, condeming Nations around the world, this includes African leaders continuing to call any African so-called Black.....

Germany Has Paid Out More Than $61.8 Billion in Third Reich Reparations
Since 1951 Germany has paid more than 102 billion marks, about $61.8 billion at 1998 exchange rates, in federal government reparation payments to Israel and Third Reich victims. In addition, Germans have paid out billions in private and other public funds, including about 75 million marks ($49 million) by German firms in compensation to wartime forced laborers, the Welt am Sonntag newspaper reported recently. These figures are based on calculations by the German Finance Ministry, the influential paper said.
Of the total, Germany has paid out 78.4 billion marks ($47 billion) on the basis of the 1965 Federal Restitution Law (BEG) to persons, especially Jews, who had been persecuted during the Third Reich era on the basis of race, religion, origin or ideology.
While most of those who were alive during the Second World War are now dead, in recent years Germany was still paying out some 1.25 billion marks (about $75 million) to 106,000 pensioners in Israel, the United States and other countries on the basis of the 1965 Restitution Law.
A substantial portion of Germany's reparations payments have been to the "Jewish Claims Conference" for Jews who had persecuted by the Third Reich. Recipients include former forced laborers and concentration camp internees, as well as individuals deprived of rights or property under the Nazis. Based in New York City, the Jewish Claims Conference (JCC) has operated for decades as a kind of supra-national governmental agency for Jews around the world.
Between 1992 and July 1998, the German federal government paid out 1.1 billion marks (about $647 million) to the JCC. During the first half of 1998, it made available 378 million marks (about $222 million) to the JCC in special one-time restitution payments for Jews who had persecuted by the Third Reich, according to a German government report issued on September 29, 1998. The JCC distributed up to 5,000 marks each to individual claimants.
In recent years Germany has paid out nearly 1.8 billion marks on the basis of special bilateral agreements concluded in 1991 and 1993 with Poland and three successor states of the former Soviet Union -- the Russian Federation, Ukraine and Belarus (White Russia) -- even though in 1953 Poland and the Soviet Union each renounced any further reparations payments from Germany.
