RAP and the Gangster mentality!
March 6, 2007 - 01:02 AM

there are a few things i just cant understand about african american culture. first of all their are many black rappers that preach about how blacks are treated unfairly and are not considered equal to the white man, but then turn around and rap about being a gangster. Many black people complain and rant on and on about how they dont get respect and are treated as 2nd class citizens, all the while take a look at their culture. Everything that is glorifiied by rapers is being a gangster. Almost every rap song has a refrence at least once to doing Drugs, Slappin bit^hes, Stealing, prison, or Shooting people. They have to ask themselves, how can they be respected and considered equals when these are the people they look up to. it would be a good start to find some new roll models instead of glorifying a raper that made it big by shooting people and selling COCAINE!

hence 50cent.

That isn't true. Sure, there are some rap songs that talk about that kind of mess, but it isn't meant to be taken seriously. Do you realize how much good these rappers do? All of the charities they donate to, or even start themselves? Music is just a form of entertainment. Once people realize that, everybody will be much better off.

Do you really think that this phenomenon is unique to the African American community ?

What about the Hammerskins ?

The Hammerskins, (also known as Hammerskin Nation) is a white supremacist gang formed in 1988 in Dallas, Texas.
The Hammerskins' primary focus is production and promotion of white power music, and many white power bands are affiliated with the group. The Hammerskins are affiliated with the record label Free Your Mind Productions.

The Hammerskins idealize historical warrior societies such as the Aryans, Vikings and Nazis. Many of its members have been convicted of harassing, assaulting and murdering non-whites.

The Hammerskins were at one time considered the United States' most well-organized racist skinhead group. Power struggles have split the group into several factions, some of which are now defunct. Chapters also exist in other countries, including Canada, England, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Hungary, Portugal, Spain, New Zealand and Australia.

I think that hatred inclinations could not be attributed to specific community.

Hatred exists in each an every community, and I believe that our primary objective, as young people looking for a better world, is to promote inter-cultural understanding instead of giving generalized judgments concerning specific groups.

Ok, i see your point, but weather songs are meant to be taken seriously or not they still send the wrong message to society. Once something is heard or seen enough times it will have an adverse effect on the communities who view it. Music is entertainment, but when you hear many rap somgs by major labels, they talk about how much they hate eachother and if they cross the line their dead. Just entertainment, it seems like their trying to make a statement to me.

What about the Hammerskins ?

Ok and about the hammerskins, i didnt mean to sound raciest, but Rap is focused around the black community and it is most prevalent in popular cultur now. i have never heard of the hammerskins so i have no say on anything about them, but it dosent seem they have as large as an effect on society.

Rap music also discusses love, loss, and the love of music in general. There are many different aspects to rap music. It's not all about gang banging and drug dealing. There are negative messages in all types of music, why are we dwelling on this one genre?

There's nothing wrong with 'RAP'. A few RAPPERS promoting negativity dosen't make RAP bad. I 've heard some positive RAP tracks that made positive imparts on my life.
So, maybe the SUBJECT should be rephrased to "Some Rappers and Gangster mentality". Don't generalize. Am tired of people's partiality to RAP....there are two sides to EVERY book. Depends on which side you prefer to see it from.cool

greetings all

You all post relevant opinions however you seem to not notice one thing. And this is what makes all the 'gangster' posturing and woman abusing in RAP unacceptable...

In music, we (afrikans worldwide) are the only once that treat women with disrespect, as sexual objects and possessions. In rock music (from goth to punk to rock) women are not cussed and objectified as in RAP.

Someone above said RAP is entertainment - I agree with that. However this resonates right through society - real life. From afrikan men being the majority population in prisons to Afrikan men treated women like objects placed on earth for their amusement on the streets.

Rappers like 50cents and Snoop embarrase me as an Afrikan woman - to me they are no different from coons and what angers me is that they seem to enjoy themselves so much

And people that listen to RAP (not all of them, but particularly younger men) take it seriously and emulate it. And that makes is completely unacceptable.

no, no Tu... I'm not blaming rap for our social ills all i'm saying is that we are constantly judged on how we portray ourselves and how we portray ourselves is in our music, our films - our arts.

Eminem is one white rapper - and since you say you are a head you know he doesn't even make one percent. In the same vain there are artists like Mos Def who can record an entire and only say bi***h twice AND in context - ref A New Danger the track The Rape Over.

I have nothing against the skills that rappers like snoop, fiddy, jayz even eminem posses - they've got skill but why can't they put out a positive track. A track that won't make any man think of his woman in a deragoratory (scuse the spellins but i think you get me) way or a song that will not glorify violence and drugs. Kanye is pop culture, through and through - he isn't even true Hip Hop like Mos Def but he can put out two albums and not have an overwhelming count of nasty words or video h****chies.

Tu... I suspect you have a very strong mother and hence you were raised right - but not everybody has that and that becomes evident in the role models they choose to follow.

I think what angers me the most - in fact it's mortifying is that the majority is afrikan artists that show us out like this. It's excess without context. These rappers don;'t have to turn conscious or militant or become activist but if there is a Book of People That Make a Difference in Society these rappers names wil not appear in it.

my point is we disrespect our women in rap more so than any culture...

and the fact that every other people/race/culture also disrespects their women doesn't mean we are not wrong for doing it or that we should carry on doing it even for entertainments sake.
