Welcome!
After a great chat with Mike Blanchard from Perth, I've decided to take this discussion global in an effort to really gain an understanding of how we can make our TIG Discussion boards really busy!!!!

The conversation starts below. Please, get involved!!!

You could start an abuse board, full of all the sexist, ageist, racist, everything-ist opinion you can handle! oh boy...I'd be there in a flash!!!

perhaps we need a board for gripes?
i could gripe all day long! gripe gripe gripe. actually, its all i really do.
for some reason i dont have anything to share with anyone at the moment.
it must be that concept of how while its becoming easier to communicate with people, the world rarely listens and its so much easier to become exiled to the depths of your own mind.
sigh.
(does anybody know the name of that old song that goes - "Hey kid, rock and roll. rock on."
im guessing its 'rock on - by Johnny Rushmore' but i could be wrong.
thanks for you help. i'll continue to try and dig myself out of my exiled state of mind-numbness while you all slave away.

Seriously though - theres nothing wrong with the boards itself. Perhaps theres some intensity lacking. and maybe the regulars could be more . . .inviting to newbies, but newbies are few and far between these days.
at least on the boards anyway.
perhaps the boards need to become more of a center point of the tig website. just a thought.

Taken from a conversation today, briefly with MikeB and then mostly with myself... as I tend to do... sorry MikeB!
----
MIKE
there certainly is a lot of energy in the boards this past week.
-----
JARRA
there is eh.
needs to be more
i mean... why would i want to come on here... just a glorified update system
for the average young joe
i mean
like a max of 10 people post regularly
at flashkit... there are 10 new posts to the discussion board every 10 - 20 minutes guaranteed... it is an event... being online is a virtual experience in real time... now... why do they post?
they want answers...
they want kudos
they want to show opinions...
----
MIKE
but its a techie site!
----
JARRA
there is constant constant growth
growth in their skillsets
----
MIKE
this place is different. it needs to go slowly so people can absorb and think.
----
JARRA
wait. to clarify. so....
maybe...
techie growth is a growth in skillsets.
in experience
in understanding
in appreciation of the many levels of flash...
the many aspects and usages..
so each new cool site submission is a chance to experience something...
hmmm and learn from that...
soo....
how do we....
take... this model
and apply it.... to something much broader than just learning Flash... yet retain the intensity of the experience... i mean... all those points above can surely be drawn as darn close parallels to our lives...
and tig is all about our lives... and those of others...
what are we missing?....
----
So....
Great points Mike in the above post! Geez...
Guys? Anybody... meow.

"thanks for you help. i'll continue to try and dig myself out of my exiled state of mind-numbness while you all slave away."
Nice! With ya there mate!
oh well...
"it must be that concept of how while its becoming easier to communicate with people, the world rarely listens and its so much easier to become exiled to the depths of your own mind."
hmmmm.... very worrying?....
so how do we make the boards more intertwined, and thus central, to the site... and the community...
jeez... already u can talk on almost any topic... can u suggest your own?
yes you can start discussions from within the boards or your updates! how fab!
u can review events and generate discussion threads based around those events! pretty nifty!
so...
maybe i should keep in mind that we have the updates too, now im sure those count for a heft byte of what could be discussion material... so no worries there...
interesting...
a gripe board.... and a totally 'dont go there' board....
maybe that isnt such a bad idea....

let's talk it over.

Better clustering of threads
October 16, 2001 - 12:49 PM
|
|
The other thing that is desparately needed is an ability to cluster threads better. I love the ability to turn an update into a discussion, but I need more control over where it goes. Throwing everything into the general discussion is not helpful.
Either people should have the option of posting an update to a specific section of the boards, or editors/moderators should have the ability to move entire discussions (without screwing up the automatic links to them).

Hmmm...

I think why you really arent seeing much movement on the discussion boards is the following: the subjects on the discussion boards r very sensitive and everyone usually has an opinion on it. The point is when u debate, it is important to get a prompt reaction...I mean, if you have to wait 10 minutes for a reply, I myself would probably forget why I was involved in the first place. Maybe TIG needs a real-time discussion board...like chat...
I really don't know if this is achieveable because I am a complete Neanderthal when it comes to computers...but that is what I think
P.S. You can laugh now...

chat.

chat is easily forgotten and can often disadvantage those who cant type as fast o keep up with the flow of conversation. and more than 4 people in a chat room kill the conversation really quickly.
the advantage of a message board is that people can wait for a reply - as well as being able to think their reply out.
as well as including links!
to the person who said people wanted to keep their opinions to themselves for fear of retribution or humiliation or both - dude! this is a youth website! we never agree!

Event Discussions
November 16, 2001 - 11:49 AM
|
|
Why is it the the topic "Event Discussions" (forumid=41)doesn't show up in the discussion index (http://www.takingitglobal.org/discuss/index.php)??? I think more people might post about their experiences at conferences/workshops if they could get to these discussions through the boards in addition to through the link from the event. It could be really helpful for bringing in traffic to long-term event discussions like the WSSD....

Ideas..
March 26, 2002 - 01:24 AM
|
|
Usually i read the disscusions that have been posted most recently, actaully i do most times i come to the site, so perhaps only having 3 there isnt enough, maybe 4 or 5 even would be better...easier access to the discussions.
Everyone has an opinion, and people need a place to express it...i dont know why people dont...maybe its because they dont want people to know thats what they think, perhaps they should have a choice to remain anonamous. I dont know much about the way most of this stuff works and if it would be possible but, i guess some people might feel that way...
anyone have anything to add on that??...

just tru to promote this site and get more participants.
dont think there is much point in doing technical modifications (except that i dont like the amount of flash on this site, making it real slow and takes long to load)
but... once people start participating and get into the discussions you wont have to worry at all.
it just needs more time.
