TIG - NOT FAIR TO AFRICA
February 14, 2007 - 02:10 AM

Before now there was a specific forum for Africa where Africans and others discuss extensively on pressing issues affecting the continent. It was usually a beehive of activities (reference to various posts and threads) and first 'port of call' for me and thousands of others each time I logged on to TIG.
Suprisingly however, it was unceremoniously removed without explanation or apology to contributors engaged in the long debates and was replaced with a feature thread titled "Africa Wake Up".
As big as African continent with its large membership in TIG, we do not want feature thread but AFRICA DISCUSSION BOARD just like you have CANADIAN DISCUSSION BOARD.
In addition, I wonder why we do not have an African serving as a moderator in any of your forums inspite of their activities in TIG. We have so many of them who are doing wonderfully well and have the potential to moderate. For instance a Nigerian from Africa, HENRY DOZIE EKWURUKE tops the list of most active members in TIG.
To this end, I am calling the attention of all Africans to this improper act and hoping that you will address the issue immediately.
As I await your urgent attention, I thank you in advance.

This isn't a conspiracy or anything but I suspect an effort to consolidate discussions into fewer discussion boards. We had many members complain that there were too many discussion boards and that we should better organize them.

I will let Madelaine respond with any other details but thanks for your feedback. In Canada, we have a specific discussion board for a national project we are doing there, and I suspect there will soon be a discussion board or regional initiative for West Africa, as we are working on a large pilot there

angrymadshockedcryingsad.I did register with TIG and from the word go have always even asked for some sought of West and Eastern regional TIG office,as it is everything has got to be cordinated from Canada. It is an issue that i raised to Jenniffer Corriero and Nick Moritus who were at that time the founders and the brains behind TIG.This site has made several changes and every now and then it keeps getting better but i would like to categorically say it has been and i qoute"NOT FAIR TO AFRICA"Needless to say the endless of times that i have even appealed to TIG to at least get proposal from Africa to begin African TIG offices but have all the cordination and direction coming from Canada,i even raised this at the Youth Employment Summit and unfortunately i believe it is a all in vain or rather i am fighting a losing battle.I have tried.Look at the content of what African TIG memebers ahve put intop this site, look at the amount of time they spend on this site,is it not time that we really inspired, informed and involved?Isnt it time that we realll proved to be "taking it global"I am lying in waiting all this time i have been a member but for this one sorry i am just NOT with you!

Dear olomu1,

I can sense your frustration in your comment. I went to look at the discussion board and it seems to me that you might be overlooking the opportunity being offered for you to start an all- African initiative, just like the Canadian one, using all of TIG's tools just like any other member can do from anywhere on the planet. If that is the case, then you owe TIG a posted apology for the misunderstanding, and then, you need to get on with the help needed for success.

By the way, what's up with

Frustration needs prayer, wisdom and dialogue, not hurry confrontration.

hi, all.

i have no sense of the history behind the issues you're discussing, but i think it would be a great idea for tig to have local offices in one or more african cities.

9090, i suggest that you get together with other africans and work together to get an office going. it doesn't have to be initiated by tig. benoit's giving you some sound advice.

Just to clarify, our CLC West Africa program will be led and managed by a staff person (Francis) based in Mali. Working through partner organizations, we will be hiring coordinators in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, and Guinea. There will be a lot of work done to engage youth in these countries, and if the program is successful it will grow!

We have been careful because we have been cautioned against establishing legal structures and providing too much scope to people on the ground wanting to run TIG in their country, because of the legal risks it puts on us.

TIG is an online network - anyone is welcome to promote it in their community, but when it comes to the risk and liability of running on-the-ground programs, we need to be very careful with what we choose to do so as not to confuse people about what TakingITGlobal really is.

The same is true in Canada - our CLC coordinators in every province are based with partner groups and help to act as liaisons to their provinces and communities, helping local organizations promote their programs. Our role is less often to develop our own on-the-ground programs (although where we see opportunities or gaps we may get involved), but more to promote, showcase, and encourage involvement in the opportunities provided by organizations around the world!

In that sense, we could even say that as a nickname for TIIG's practice, Taking It Global is for "Total Inspiration Goal".

...may all blessings be with us all...

Mfurdyk, would you please let Madelyn know that the African community is eagerly awaiting her response since your explanation on this issue does not hold water.
I am not talking about establishing offices in Africa like my colleagues are advocating rather engage our people as moderators and in other capacity in recognition of their positive contributions to TIG. May I remind you that TIG is supposed to be a global online community, so let it be.
Thanks

Just as a quick reply before Madelaine replies, the only open positions we have for international members is working in two main areas on our online community. The first is a translator for one of the languages that exists on the site and the other is a forum moderator on the discusion boards.

Members who are interested in helping translate the website should contact multilingual@takingitglobal.org with the language that they are interested in translating.

For discussion board moderators, we posted the openings for almost 3 months and the current moderators are those who applied. While I agree that Henry is an extremely active member on TIG, he perhaps does not have the time to commit to being a moderator on the site. He has also been profiled as a feature member as have many other active members. If anyone wishes to be a moderator of a specific forum, they should email discuss@takingitglobal.org

I hope that helps smile

I think as the moderator has explained, we should exercise a little bit of patience and see what comes out of this suggestion.

I strongly believe that, the moderator will not let we Africans down.

Now that the debate about Canad's identity is emerging through TIG's work in the world, I suggest that we allow for a theme to emerge from here, so that this discussion may deepen into the focus where dreams become realty. The theme can be offered as being:

"Because of its priviledged history, Canada's destiny is shaping into a cultivating ground of a mature people of all people, serving in the journey of humanity from self-destruction to self-control and community self-government"

Are we up to to take on the challenge of healing the meaning of living in the State of Justice, of Peace and of Joy?

One dream that seems to be available to become realitynow, is the possibility to connect the movement of a mature people of all people through the Internet Open Source Movement from Canada to Europe, coming on by the collaboration of TIG with the EU Knowledgeboard.

To explore such dreaming, please go to:
