Black History Month in schools?
February 9, 2007 - 01:48 PM

Does anybody learn about Black History Month in school? I'd be interested in knowing what people learned - I remember having small assemblies in High School every year - but it was never incorporated into our History text books.
Does anyone have any events planned for BHM?

I remember last year I and my friends had performed a play called Ma Rainey's Black Bottom by August Wilson for the American Information Resource Centre ( USI).

[link="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ma_Rainey's_Black_Bottom"][link="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ma_Rainey's_Black_Bottom"][/link]

I mentioned the name to my good friend and he almost fell of the chair laughing
stick out tongue

I played the character of Levee, the young hot headed trumpeter...
It was an amazing experience...i loved every moment of it.
We felt as if we were reliving the story as the dialogues are written in typical lingo of the time.
I learned so much about the Jazz Era just by doing that play...I wouldn't have gained so much knowledge by reading any history book written on the period.

Well, every day a student from high school or middle school (my school is combined with bothbig grin) tells us over the P.A about a non-famous African American. From activists, to black entrepreneurs.. these "speecehes" represent different ways that those people changed society. wink

I'm from Ireland (Eire) and I know that going to school over here I never came across it but maybe they don't have it her. Seems like a good idea though.

We have small parts of Black History in our history text books at my school, nothing major, like a chapter but hey it's something, we also have a black history month assembly which is so entertaining.

We would briefly touch on Black History Month in English by reading famous African American authors. We learned about other African Americans in history, people like Harriet Tubman, Dr. King, and other famous African Americans. I like the idea of learning about influential--but less famous--African Americans during Black History Month, but we didn't do this during school. www.myspace.com/youthventure

I wish we had soemthing like that over here... i'd love to learn about stuff like that.. but we mostly learn about stuff that's happend in our own country. Its annoying since nobody knows much and even though we DO learn about stuff like this, its only little parts and nobody recognises it. But yeah, things are different here. I hope you have a good celebration month... i'll celebrate by myself. I just think its right, even though im not a part of it. =]

I never had much of an awareness for black history month in school. When I went to private school, it ws barely mentioned, and when I went to public school, it was mentioned by related clubs and organizations

Hi Guys,

I live in Nigeria and for me everyday is black history day and every month is black history month. I want to charge my brothers out there, whenever it is black history month, do not limit what you'll learn to the past, learn about the present conditions of your brothers in Africa and how you can interact and network with them.

Please try and watch this movie 'amazing grace' based on how the popular hymn amazing grace was written in Calabar, Nigeria by a white man following his ship wreck during the slave trade era.

Leanr more about the culture of Africa, its language, its rich dynamism, such that you can appreciate a lot about this wonderful continent.

Africa is not only about wars, hiv/aids and malaria.

There is lot more to Africa.

Cheers
Rotimi
