Tochi Iwuchi Execution in Singapore
January 28, 2007 - 03:04 PM

|
Itz a pity that lotta thingz happen in the Asian Continent. One of such is the execution by hanging for any drug related offences.
I think itz high time the united nations map out punishment rules for any country that violates the law against humanity.
Tochi Iwuchi was murdered for no reasonable reason ,in the sence that his trial was to be given a second tought after his was convicted for drug traffiking.Though who ever voilates the law should go in for it but in his case there were symtoms of innocence .so i believe he shouldn't have been judged in such a manner.
Secondly, The human right organisations all over the world should stand up for there rights. If they had to protect humanity.
A jail term is suppose to be taken rather than execution by hanging for any body who is covicted for drug trafficking .So i believe itz time for we the Human right organisation to stand on our feet and defend humanity.
Though itz commonly said that when a man dies ,women gave birth to another but they dont really give birth to grown up (adults) when ever they give birth.

I hadn't heard of these laws before. The death penalty for any drug offense is absurd. I will definately bring up this topic at my school's next Amnesty International meeting.

I agree with you. I find it terribly painful that the death sentence should be mated out that easily ... even to drug offenders.
What really gives anybody the right to decide whether another human being deserves to live or die?
Isn't it possible that they can be locked away and rehabilitated?

Could you provide some link to the incident? It would help us to have a deeper understanding of the matter.
Thanks,
Anu

this is a really late reply, but these articles by a Singaporean blogger Alex Au give a pretty detailed account of the case:
http://www.yawningbread.org/arch_2006/yax-645.htm
http://www.yawningbread.org/arch_2007/yax-707.htm
i'm rather confused now, and distressed over the apparent lack of respect to human life brought about by capital punishment. and also because there are so many ways to see capital punishment in different situations. is it (ever) justified then?:/

This is essentially facism - Singapore is known for have extremely harsh punishments for all kinds of crimes.
and I agree that this can be considered a kind of human rights violation - human rights groups should get involved
I would say that there are more pressing crisis's for the Human Rights groups and they can't be everywhere all the time.

Many countries have the death penalty for possession of drugs.. Hong Kong, Sri Lanka and Indonesia to name a few..
Thailand hands out long prison sentences.

Although Sri Lanka has the death penalty, it had not been implemented from early 70's. Hopefully it will stay that way!
