I want everyones opinion about this subject. I was in class the other day when our class was debating whether the death penalty should exist or should it just be life with no parole ever. Let me know your feelings about this subject....do you feel there should be a death penalty or just life without parole? Explain your reasoning. Thanks

My view is that there shouldn't be a death penalty.
And I suppose I should give my reasoning
There are so many reasons to abolish the penalty worldwide, I consider myself lucky to live in a country that is sensible to have already to have done that.
The death penalty has three aims,
1 it aims to scare others out of committing such a crime,
2 it aims to show our hatred of the crimes they've committed (in other words it's to punish them)
3 its cheaper than keeping them alive in prison
Now to confront those ideas, firstly (1) the idea of it reducing the crime rate is just plain (wrong...
consider the south of the USA
FBI Report Reveals Murder Rate Rise in the South...
According to the FBI's Preliminary Uniform Crime Report for 2002, the murder rate in the South increased by 2.1% while the murder rate in the Northeast decreased by almost 5%. The South accounts for 82% of all executions since 1976; the Northeast accounts for less than 1%. (FBI Preliminary Uniform Crime Report 2002, June 16, 2003).
I could quote other studies in more detail but I have a lot more things to mention.
(2) It aims to show hatred of crimes, this is an idea of vengeance, plain and simple. Killing someone doesn't undo rape, doesn't bring victims back to life or anything. It's a simple 'you murdered them, we'll murder you!' A state sanctioned murder is still a murder.
(3)Finally the fact of being cheaper shouldn't even be considered. In my view we shouldn't place a monetary value on human life (I'll leave that to be expanded by others)
Now... what about weaknesses?
Firstly if there's no advantage to kill someone, why do it? If keeping them in prison can do the job, surely thats preferable.
Now secondly is the idea of rehabilitation, prison can't rehabilitate if you execute the prisoners, take people who claim they weren't in the right state of mind when committing crimes, surely we can attempt to help these people whilst they are being punished by being in prison? Also what about child offenders? Sentencing someone to death at age 17 for a crime committed at 14 not only goes against United Nations Conventions on the Rights of the Child but also prevents them ever having a chance for rehabilitation.
It won't let me write any more weaknesses, I've obviously rambled on far too long

Though, this thread should probably be under some different section than 'Health and Wellness'

I am against the death penalty. I think killing a criminal, is just as bad as the act the criminal committed. That makes you a criminal too. Even criminals deserve a second chance. People can change, as I know from personal experience in writing with a death row inmate. Also, the death penalty always carries to risk of killing someone who turns out to be innocent after the execution. Everyone who supports the death penalty is a murderer. Schwarzenegger is a murderer. Bush is a murderer.

This thread is being moved to Human Rights and Equity board where it seems more appropriate.
