his lack of experience will be more of a handicap then his ethnicity.
I like Obama alot - I am not sure he is ready to be president yet.
but he does have a real shot.

I think most of America is ready for a huge change. Obama could be it. Although somehow Bush was re-elected , which still blows my mind; with my country its hard to tell. I have high hopes for Obama and think he could be a great president.

If Bush was ready with lot of experience to be the President.... I would think twice before giving my vote to somebody as 'experienced ' as him.
He has almost managed to spread a hate culture across the globe !
a clash of civilization !
and a death toll which shames the entire administration !
I feel Obama is any day better than the other tried and tested candidates !

"If Bush was ready with lot of experience to be the President"
Bush actually had a severe lack of experience going into the Presidency - not an abundance
he won in spite of his inexperience
especially when he was running in the Primary against McCain who had MUCH more.
anyway Anu - I am not so desperate that I am going to support someone without getting to know them thoroghly - just because their "new"
Bill Richardson might run for instance - he has both a good perspective and instincts AND a dozen years experience as Governor.
I would be happier if after the primary Obama ended up as the Vice President on the ticket with someone like Richardson.

I know I haven't spent a lot of time learning the ways of Washington. But I've been there long enough to know that the ways of Washington must change."
I hope Senator Obama makes it.
[link="http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/6350987.stm"]
Obama throws his hat in the ring .
And, as the sun began warming the crisp Illinois air, Barack Obama threw his hat into an already crowded ring.
A large, expectant crowd - many of them young - heard him formally declare that he was running for president.
Just a few months ago, the odds against an Obama campaign in 2008 were long. Now he is among the early favourites to secure the Democratic nomination.
Face of a new generation
He chose to make his announcement at a highly symbolic venue - the Capitol building in Springfield, where Abraham Lincoln delivered his famous "Divided House" speech, denouncing the divisive effects of slavery.
The son of a Kenyan father and a white Kansas mother, Obama used his address to portray himself as the multi-racial face of a new generation - a Lincoln-esque healer of a divided nation. It was well-received, by a largely sympathetic crowd.
Mr Obama faces some tough opposition
The only dissenting voices seemed to come from a group of anti-abortion activists protesting against Obama's liberal stance on this and other social issues.
The speech did not break new ground, but it did allow him to emphasise perhaps his most significant policy difference from his main rivals.
Unlike Hillary Clinton or John Edwards, the then-state senator opposed the Iraq war from the beginning.
It is a position that plays well with the Democratic base - and could be one of Obama's trump cards in the long run towards primary season. However, it does leave him open to accusations of being weak on national security.

umm.. for example, something that lacks in Canada's political system is representation. It is all old white guys. Obama and even (Hillary) Clinton are both excellent candidates for shaking that *old boys club* mentality.
That being said, there is so much kerfuffle about his smoking! I can't believe people would NOT vote for a candidate because of a couple camels. I don't know if it as serious a problem as the media is hyping it to be but...
We loved (Bill) Clinton for his sexual indiscretions, but we demonize Obama for smoking. It seems a bit over the top to me.
does Obama's smoking make you not want to vote for him?

Personally..I dont think he will make it..but that's not due to the fact that he is a smoker..I really don't think he'll get the votes

basejaxx - all he has to do - is "quit" very publically and encourage others to do the same.
he can turn it into political hay.
Obama will have a big platform and he will be a major national political figure after this.
I am still betting that he gets the VP nod - we'll he see - he'll beat out Edwards.
Edwards doesn't really have any experience - besides 2 years in the Senate and unsuccessful bid at VP.
I think fundamentally Obama is smarter than Edwards - he might be smarter than Hillary too - but Obama is going to have a tough time overcoming his deficit margin.
and if he does beat out Hillary in the Primary - McCain will kill him in the general.

I like Barach Obama. The way he reacted to Australian PM Howard's comments was hilarious.
But there is one problem with Obama.
His name and surname do not sound as if the bearer of which will be seated in the Whitehouse and representing the freest country in the world (this isn't my opinion).
As much as many Americans might like Obama, the much unconscious effect induced by Obama's name and sirname will have a tremendous effect on electors.
Many will, not even realising it, dismiss him because of this unconscious effect. Maybe later on, if Obama manages to get some high position
as secretary of state or alike, maybe the following elections might be favorable to him.
I do like H. Clinton as well and I think she has many more chances to be a next US president.

From what I hear from others, I don't think that Obama has a chance to be elected because of his lack of experience and the fact that he has been a relative unknown until recently. I do think that he is one of the better Democratic canidates and would consider voting for him if I agreed with his policies.
Clinton is a very polorizing figure and I don't think that she would be elected for President. I personally would not vote for her because she never seems to take a stand on anything, but just goes with what is popular at the time.
In the end, I do not think that race or gender will decide this election.

Elemental, you said his name may cause some problems. While this does seem possible, i dont believe that it is such a huge issue. What is in a name? When Jimmy Carter went on the ballots, he refused to be James Earl Carter, his full name. He even went to court to be allowed to run as Jimmy. Still, he won the elections. Barack is more of a stretch but i believe a name wont be a deciding factor in the elections.
by the way, nice user name.

though i do like the idea of having a president of black origin, i think it is too early in senator barak obama's career to throw in a prediential candidacy bid. i dont think that the rest of america feels comfortable with him quite yet either because of his youth and far less experience than other candidates. i do however think that as a vice president, he will gain the expeience and the trust of voters as time goes on. Hilary clinton should choose him as a running mate if she wins the primary election. after 2 terms of serving as vice president, i think barak will be perfect for the job

Does he have a chance? Probably not.
I think the 'middle white america' would have too much influence if they all decided to vote.
